Best Sounding Engine

I would like to know what type of engine you think sounds the best, or what your favorite engine sound is? Do you like the sound of Honda's VTEC kicking in or the sound of the secondaries opening up on a four barrel carb at WOT? What about the whine of a supercharger or the sound of a turbo spooling? Or maybe you like the distinctive rumble of a Harley V-Twin or when a 2 stroke engine hits it's powerband. Do you like the sound of a propain-injected turbo deisel or the scream of a Wankel. Do you like the sound of Flowmaster or Greddy exhaust, or just plain open header(s). Personaly, my favorite engine sound is the deep muffled roar of a radically cammed stroker rat on a boat, with exhaust exiting under the water. Let me know what you think.

a 1971 351ci cleveland blown to 600hp with sawed of exaust right after the extractors connect with exaust pipe.

imagine a massive roar of a v8 + that supercharger sound + a really high pitched machine gun. ALL in one sound.

nothing quite like it!!! :)

Of the plebian cars......the 4.6L V8 in the Mustang GT, et al is pretty nice sounding. An uncorked MR2 Turbo sounds pretty beastly as well......really surprised me.

The sounds of lots of boost on a very large capcity engine, and Im talking 20lbs + on some thing with at least 8litres sounds pretty damn awsome.
But thats hard to find unless your close to a large truck, so I do have a soft spot for the induction noise of Honda's, but for all over sound an old Cosworth BDA engine sucking through twin 50s sounds pretty damn awsome.

Yeah, I love that sucking induction noise on Honda/Acuras with a performance intake. BTW, what is a Cosworth BDA engine? Oh! I just realized what my favorite sound is. You ever been to a tractor pull competition? The sound of four or more open exhaust huffed big blocks all screaming at the same time is almost enough to make me spunk in my pants.

Notice how similar the sound of an MR2 and a Porsche 911 is??? It's kinda strange...

I think part of the reason the Mustang GT draws so much fire is the exhaust note makes promises the car cannot quite keep. The 99-up Mustang GT is nowhere near my favorite Mustang, but it is my favorite sounding Mustang....and car for that matter.

I also really like the sound of a blower with a slight whine, or a turbo when you decelerate. Gotta love those blow-off valves.

Ferrari F355, but in a very very close second is the Diablo GT.

Any engine from Ferrari. I just love the Doppler Effect from an F1 car as it flies by turning over 10,000 RPM. There is also nothing like the low burble of a turbocharged engine and then the sound when it spools shoving air into the intake manifold and then there is the sound of the DV or BOV diverting or venting air when the throttle plate closes. I also love the low rumble of a big V8, namely the Hemi.

They all put a smile on my face. I just don't get enjoyment from a quite engine, but I also can't stand the sound of the fart can exhausts.

Out of all the cars I've driven, the 2003 S600. Twin turbo V12, very sick, even more so when I was walking back after parking a car and a buddy flew by me in it.
But my absolute favorite was a modified Porsche GT2 I saw this summer. I got talking to the groom of one of the weddings about cars, and he pulls out his cell phone and calls up one of his friends. Five minutes later his buddy pulls up in the GT2. All sorts of upgrades to this thing. He wouldn't let any of us near it, but when they took off, the guy was nice enough to stomp on it and rattle some windows before reaching some disgusting speed in a very small amount of road.

I love the sound of the new supercharged Cobra/Lightning when it starts to scream! I don't know why its so, but I love that sound, it overcomes everything else I hear. I did get a chance to drive an R/T dodge supercharged. The guy told me it was pushing 500hp. It sure felt and sounded like it. That truck would tackle 100 in no time, as long as your going straight.

I'm partial to the high pitched whine. Any 600 sportbike at 12-15000 rpm ALWAYS brings a huge smile to my face.

Although it is awesome when you can feel the exhaust note in your chest coming from a muscle car.

And of course, any Ferrari.

hmm.. The 550 & 575M don't sound special (at all) if you ask me, and the 360 sounds too tinny and artificial. The F355 sounds a hell of a lot better :2cents:

F1 cars sound bad assed, period. Although I'm not too much of a motorcycle guy, any of those crotch rockets sound pissed off when they start revvin out. Small blocks are bad assed too, especially when they are revving out, and when it comes to idle, a big block with a choppy cam sounds pretty crazy. Anyone ever been to the real big boy drags with the NHRA top fuelers? You can go in the pits and stand there watching them rebuild the motors. When they test fire them with nitro... holy shit, you haven't heard noise until you've heard that. It shakes the ground. As for blowers and stuff here:

I know some of you don't like Z06s, but the supercharger on the vette in the:

LPE Supercharged ZO6 Corvette - Great video and sound.
Part one - Road Race Action Sept 2003
Part two - Road Race Action Sept 2003
Part three - Road Race Action - coming soon!
Part four - Road Race Action - coming soon!
Part five - Drag race vs ATI supercharged Corvette Sept 2003

section is freakin incredible sounding, minus the gay music background, that supercharger must have hurt their ears at the track. It has the most godawful shriek coming out of it I've ever heard. It's a huge file but download it and listen, when it's coming down the strait, it just howls!

For some reason, I agree with you. Blasphemy to dismiss a Ferrari note, however, which I think the main problem with the V12s is their lack of volume..as for the 360, well, it had TALL shoes to fill after the sweet release of noise from a 355... :2cents:
