Automatic Transmission Issue 96/626

I am having a problem with my transmission. It is "not shifting into gear", in other words, the lever indicates that it is in "DRIVE", but I remain at a standstill. It just revs and won't go. It makes no difference if I am in Drive, 2nd, 1st or Reverse... they all act the same way.
If I keep trying, then it does go into gear after a couple seconds.
When it is COLD it does this (late Fall in Minneapolis). After it warms up, the problem seems to go away. Is it just low transmission fluid, or is it likely to be something more serious? I don't drive frequently, but intend to warm up the car and check the fluid this weekend.
If it is low on fluid, how many quarts of transmission oil is it supposed to hold when it is full? I know it is partially full, so I won't be dumping four quarts in or anything, but I would like to know how much goes in there to fill it to "ideal capacity".
Thanks for any assistance.

Sounds like you have some sticking valve body seals. It would be wise to have someone rebuild the valve body and install new seals and orings in it. If you don't have any problems with the shifting then that should be the extent of your repairs. It would be a wise idea to get the update for the valve body also which is a shift kit. Good luck and hope this helps. If it is shifting properly and no slippage apparent, don't let anyone tald you into a rebuild. Bob

No mention on how many miles. Could be the valve body seals or just needs the trans filter replaced.I agree that if it seems to shift ok, without slipping, don't let them talk you into a rebuild...later Mark.
