96 XLT Keyless Remot Programming

I just purchased a used "96 XLT 4X4 with power everything, but got no remotes with the truck, only keys. Are all power lock vehicles set up for keyless remotes? If so, does anyone know how to program them. I've tried the "off-run" times 5 and times 8, but to no avail. Locks never cycled. All my previous Explorers (3) came already set up.

Did you ever get this figured out? I have a '96 V8. Two keys, but only 1 remote. I wouldn't mind getting a second one.

What do you mean by {I've tried the "off-run" times 5 and times 8}? I'm sure this is not what you're referring to, but if you put the key in the driver door and turn it "unlock", "neutral", "unlock", "neutral" it will unlock all the doors. This is a function of the powerlocks, though. Nothing to do with the remote. Thought it might help you until you are able to get a remote.

Well You will have to proboly buy an used remote on ebay or serch for keyless entry replacements on the web . All older XLT modles came standard with the remote and optional or dealer installed on xls .

I just read a nasty article about our lucky explorers (95-97)...The RAP module is particularly sensitive to static discharges from the driver's seat, causing it to fail.
www.alldata.com/service_provider/techrx/2002/200201212d.html

I'm in the same boat - the locks won't cycle after turning the key on & off 8 times (or 5). I've located the module (in jack compartment) to get the factory code, 5 digits, but no luck on any thing.

I'm still trying to find a used module to replace it. I'll do anything to avoid going to the dealer.

Does anyone know of a way to confirm the module is shot?

Thanks.

Not all power-lock Exploders are keyless entry. The tell-tail sign of keyless entry is the keypad on the driver door. So far as the remote goes, it comunicates with the keyless entry system and if available, can be found on ebay for around $20 with complete programming instructions as I found for my '99 XLT. To the best of my knowledge, the remotes are vehicle specific, at least to a range of vehicles anyway. When I did my remote, the ignition sequence (off-on) was 8 times ending with the key on.
Hope this helps.
Curt.

Some are 8 some are 5 and some are 3 I beleive. But you will know when you've hit the right amounts of ignition on-offs by the locks cycling. Oh and some vehicles have remote entry even if they don't have the keypad. My friends got a Windstar with remote entry and no keypad, not sure how you could determine for sure if it is remaote capable tho.
