Is there a possibility that the 2004 Pontiac GTO (HSV GTS Holden coupe) become a model? I'd really like one, and considering purchase of a real one in a few years. I guess if there aren't any I'll kitbash a vette and a grand prix coupe and make one.

It would be awesome if they make one. I'm sure that Revell will come out with one soon after it is released.

Actually, it is like the Holden Monaro in Australia, the HSV GTS Coupe is a slightly tuned version by Holden Special Vehicles (HSV).

Sorry about that jonno, I was just going by what the HSV GTS coupe and the new GTO's similarities are. Look pretty close to being identical.

Do you even accept that car to be called the Pontiac GTO, considering what Ford has done with the 2005 Mustang? :)
Anyway, it'd be an interesting modeling subject.

GTO: Fully optioned, incredibly quick, tastefully handsome four seat coupe.

That's how they always have been, and this car is no different. It runs a good quarter, handles like a dream, and stops with incredible force for a car of its heft. Bob Lutz and his group hit the nail on the head with this one, in my opinion, and resurrected an icon without Ford's cheap retro-styling cop-out.

Quite frankly, the '05 Mustang looks more like one of Thom Taylor's throwaway sketches than an actual car. I'm sorry, but it neither pays true homage to the classic style of Mustangs past nor breaks new styling ground on its own.

Too bad, the chassis is supposed to be much more competent than the old.

The new GTO aint nothing but a Rear-Drive Grand Prix. I don't see anything special about that, Chevy is looseing sales so there bringing back the "old" muscle car names thinking to boost sales.... :disappoin

Yeah and thats its biggest problem. Its just a second rate mongrel built by Holden and shipped to America as a marketing exercise.
Typically of GM Holden here in Australia they had to make a mongrel to race because they couldn't win in any legal category in the world and that was the only way you will get one of those things to handle or stop like a performance car.

I would get that model if they make one, as a "non-US-GM-fan". And it's funny how they write about the new GTO in magazines, that it is based on the Holden or it shares the floorplan of the Holden or the same platform, when in reality it just IS the Holden Monaro with LHD and a different front bumper... And the Holden Monaro is the coupe version of Holden Commodore, which is based on Opel Omega, and the Cadillac Catera was also a rebadged Opel Omega, so the people in the USA don't seem to realise, that the new Pontiac GTO is basically a coupe version of the Cadillac Catera with a V8 engine. In every case the roots go to the Opel Omega, which is not even in production anymore.

I have already the diecast 1/18 version of the Holden Monaro (see the diecast-forum here in AF) and the Pontiac GTO would be a nice addition to the collection. Maybe I could try to do a Opel Omega Coupe V8 out from the kit...

And if they had just made the Gran Prix rear-wheel drive, would you be happy? And, if I might ask, how does Chevrolet benefit from a Pontiac marketing move?

Keep in mind that the name wasn't Pontiac's in the first place. Recall the original GTO was a Ferrari and that the first Pontiac GTO was nothing more than a hot motor and a cushy interior in a Tempest.

This IS the GTO. A powerful V8 where there usually is a 6 (the Omega platform which is a very competent one from what I've seen and whose next generation will almost definitely spawn the next Camaro) and and a few tweaks to the style. As for platform sharing, lets look back to the GTO's stable mates. Hmmmm...

GM A Bodies.
Buick Gran Sport/Skylark/GSX
Chevrolet Malibu/Chevelle
Oldsmobile Cutlass/442

So the GTO sharing a platform is nothing new. How about engines?

Pontiac 389ci V8 also found in...
Catalina, Gran Prix, 2+2, Bonneville. Engine family includes 326ci engine in Tempest and 421ci engine option in full size cars.

So a shared engine isn't new either. Gasp! Could it be that they aren't doing something sacriligeous? Could it be that General Motors is giving us exactly what the GTO was and always has been?

It is. Stop whining. A great musclecar has returned in such a way that it doesn't detract from its myth, nor does it use cheap knock-off retro styling to lure us into showrooms (like some unmentionable coming generations of musclecar). The new GTO is it's OWN GTO. It's a new car based on another good car.

And, as a parting shot, was there this much bitching when Nissan decided to have the 350Z share a platform with Infiniti's G35 coupe and sedan?

I agree the kit would be nice especially for hacking up and building a WildBunch or Pro stock car. Lots of possibilities.
And I agree old fella, go Murph especially with limited testing possibilities and if Ambrose loses it will be his own fault for not being agressive enough at Puke. Having to let Ingall through to make a path through the other cars was pathetic and yes I am definitely a Ford fan Jonno but I will be happy to see Murph win as he IS a Kiwi and he is not driving like a wimp. Either way as a Kiwi I will be happy with Murph or Ambrose as champion as it has taken a kiwi team to get the only BAs to the front consistently.

A-HA!! I knew that car reminded me of something I've seen before, the Caddy Catera/ Opel Omega twins!!

Any way, I still think it's pretty nice, and complaining about how the 05 mustang breaks no new styling ground, niether does the GTO, infact the reason it doesn't offend me is because it's pretty bland looking.

I took these pics at SEMA last week, it's much better in person, but so is the 05' mustang.

Truth be told, im really dissapointed in the new GTO. Sure it has one of the 10 greatest engines (true) the LS1. But M/T only ran it to a 14.0 with the production version. Also, im pissed off at GM for turning the malibu, grand prix, impala into FWD cars. Not to mention the end for the F-Body. Greatest late model muscle car ever. (Can you name a 1998 or newer muscle car/pony car that can run mid 13's stock for under 25K?)

BTW maybe SLP might get a hand of one of those things. Australia has a 435 (i think) HSV Monaro, with the LS6, full racing interior and suspension. Kinda like a racing street car I.E. Porsche GT2

You know guys, I care less what all of your have to say bad about the GTO. I know all it is is a rwd restlyed grand prix. But, maybe, just maybe, I like it. I asked a simple question about the possibility of a new GTO model, or possibly the HSV GTS holden model, I'd like them both to be honest (perferably with an engine). Who cares if the 05 mustang looks like something someone drew and trashed the idea, it is nice, but I prefer the GTO, because I have always liked them and am quite happy GM will have another RWD car.

ah yes, the HRT 427. Was gonna be a $250k car but for some reason Holden Special Vehicles decided not to actually complete the car. As far as I know the car had 420kW and 780 Nm of torque from a 7litre V8, pretty much full carbon fibre/kevlar interior... afaik the rims are like magnesium alloy or something, and cost more than a new car, lol And with a time of 3.8s from 0-100 its pretty fkn awsome

I'd take the HSV over the GTO if it were available in the states. But it isn't, unless you have the cash to import it here, (i don't) you'll have to settle for the GTO, which is still a great car such as it's monaro gts counterpart.

I didn't see the HRT post, yeah it's a pity that got cut by HSV. Shame to see it but I suppose it was a waste of money really, not many people would have the money to buy something that is virtually a $250,000 Commodore. No where to go 360km/h or use 0-100km/h in under 4 seconds in Australia, well anywhere that is responsible.

I'm liking the idea that GM is bringing with the GTO. I wouldn't say that the GTO is the fastest, or the coolest, or the best design, but with the GTO, GM is stepping into RWD cars again. I just hope that they carry that idea to some of their other cars. Me personally, the GTO isn't all that. It is a pretty cool car, but the idea behind it is what really drives me.

I agree with what Camaroboy said earily in this thread. GM has kind of screwed with some awesome cars, and I don't really like it. Some people may, but guess what, it's all an opinion. Everyone has one. I still can't believe that GM killed the Camaro after 35 years. At least there are rumors about it maybe coming back in 05. We can only prey that it does. And hopefully GM doesn't screw it up with some FWD, no hp crap.
As a wrap up to all that I said, I just have to say opinion's are like ass holes. Everyone has one, everyone stinks!

give it some time. i can promise you by the end of next year someone will have made a fortune exporting GTS Monaro bodykits to the states... lots of people I know are talking about doing it...

actually you are wrong. i think every single one of the potential buyers would have paid WHATEVER HSV wanted... so they just said that they cancelled it because it cost too much in the end, which means that the problem was somewhere else but they didnt want to make fools out of themselves.

Ok, like it, I don't care. I was just stating soemthing from what I have understood from having them around me for the 2 years they have been on the roads here.
About the HRT427, I just don't see why Holden bothered and I think they realised it too because they cancelled the production of 20(or something like that) for the people who got on the ordering list.
The Monaro has never been a Supercar no reason for the HRT 427, besides to waste money and time and let the people who ordered one down by cancelling any planned production. At least the 427 might of helped with the Bathurst 24 hours Monaro racecar.
