Ticket For No Plates

I'm in the military and am currently stationed in Maryland. I bought a truck awhile ago and wanted to register it in my home of record, Oregon. I had to turn in the Maryland plates that were on it to the original owner so they could quit paying insurance on it. No big deal, I thought, I'll just leave it in the dorm parking lot until I get my plates. I went outside a few days later and noticed a ticket on my truck for no plates. I went down to the law enforcement office to see what was up. They said that it didn't matter if I wasn't driving it, when you're in Maryland your vehicle has to have plates no matter what. I explained that I had already turned in the old plates and that I was just waiting for the new ones to arrive in the mail. They said they didn't care and if I didn't have plates in three days they would impound my truck and I'd have to pay $70 for every day it was in there, plus another fee to get it out, plus another fee for having it towed. A$$holes! Fortunantly, one of my friends let me borrow an extra liscence plate with current registration. It took a whole month for Oregon to send me my plates, but in the end it was all worth it. Being registered in Oregon is great, no sales tax on the truck, plus there's no emissions laws or inspections. So if anyone lives in Maryland, just make sure you have plates or have your vehicle out of sight.

Yep!! My friend got ticket last week for no plates on his car and he just bought it. This how cops make money off people.

You see thats where you are wrong. Cops do not make $ off people. If the registry issues you two plates you are supposted to put two plates on your car plain and simple. If your car has NO plates on it and it is in a public parking lot for example it is subject to being given a ticket or towed......

I thought in some states you werent required to have a front license plate. I think its bull that you need plates on a parked car.
but otherwise, where DOES the money go from people's fines?

to the district or township. the more money they bring in the more goodies they can buy-more tickets doesn't nesicarily mean they get more money at the end of the day. but they are required to write a certain amount of tickets per month or something like that. at the end of the month in indiana it's really bad, they're all over the place.

They arnt required to write a # of tickets, at least in CA. The only thing is if your a cop and you dont write the average amount of tickets your station will look at you funny. I often wonder who I am suporting with my speeding tickets though?
My buddy got nailed for no front lic plate, I thought it was od, i have driven around in my car with no front plate for 3 years and had no problem?

It is illegal to drive without license plate in California, I've known a lot of people who had gotten a citation for it.
but I've also been driving without a front license plate for 5 years and still had no problem.

Yeah, the cop was pretty cool, he admitted the only reason he pulled us over was because he was looking for duis. It just worries me because I dont want to get a ticket for no front plate then have to to the damn dmv and get one

that pisses me off.
My mustang has no place to mount the front plate, And I sure as hell don't want to put any holes in my front bumper.
CA sucks for emisions too.

Yeah ca REALLY sucks for emissions. Thats why you register your car in a county that doesnt have smog :) Takes a little work but can be done.
We were in my buddies mr2 which has no sport for front plates and would look like crap with them. The guy put toyota celica on the ticket though, so maybe he can get it thrown out?

As long as the cop has the right license plate number, then there is really no way out, unless you go to court.
But I doubt the judge will take that as an excuse.

My roomate had gotten a ticket for having expired plates in our driveway! I thought that was quite funny. Whats even funnier, he backs into the driveway, so I'm assuming that the cop actually got out of his car to and check the plates. If you ask me, that seems very odd. The only possible explanation I can think of is that the cop was looking to get sombody... He must had checked every single car in the neighborhood if he is going to take the time to get out of his vehicle, walk up to our house, and look behind our cars. It must be true that nothing really does happen in our town. I'm sure their are cool cops and dickhead cops.....guess which one he was?

That does sound weird. Here in IN, were not required to have front plates, so the only plate was on the back of his vehicle. I still find that weird that he had to of got out of his car and check the plate.

Every state is different, and then the local town laws differ as well.
Some states require both plates, some just the rear.
Most states wont allow no plates, to be parked on the street, but driveways are Ok? Some places require plates on ALL vehicles, even if they don’t run and are parked off-street.
This makes it hard on people who are doing long-term restorations.
In NJ you also have to have insurance with a set of plates, so it becomes more expensive. Some towns allow un-reg/uninsured in your driveway, others require it be parked in a garage. Some places you can pull into your backyard, other places that’s not allowed either.
Some towns consider pkg lots for dorms, apartments, & condos “public”, so it’s the same as parking on the street. I once had up to three cars on my property that were unregistered, for about 2 years and never had
A problem. But a few towns away, a guy had the shell of a 57 Chevy in a private driveway, but got tickets until he registered & insured it, because the neighbors complained.

I got a ticket for not having a front licence plate the day I graduated high school, (first one too!).
Recently, (the last 2 years or so) I've been driving around without it again. (it broke off.....seriously)
Nobody seems to care though. I don't get the priorities of the local pigs.

I've been pulled over because a cop thought I had fake plates. He said he thought I was transporting my car and it was a project car (it was true, but the plates were legit).
