Maxima won't start

My 1997 Maxima won't start. It was running fine the last time I drove it. I parked it in the driveway and then when I went to start it again it just cranks over and doesn't fire. I replaced the fuel filter and I can hear the fuel pump run when I turn on the key. I have no clue as to what is wrong. Is there a fuel shut off switch that may have been tripped by someone bumping my car ? I had that happen once to my Ford Taurus. The switch was in the trunk. If there is one on my Maxima can you tell me where it is ?

Do you have spark??? Check all connections to coil etc.
May have a bad one. If not time to plug in a scanner to verify crank rpm. Goodluck.

Thanks for replying to my post jmd102. I appreciate it. I found out it was the cam position sensor. I got a new one for $65.00 and had it installed and it started right up. Now it is showing that my knock and oxygen sensors are out. If it's not one thing it's another huh ? Thanks for your help.

Well take it for a good drive and get her cleared out, then recheck your O2 values. Sometimes they can get crudded over or even damp with fuel when cranking and not starting. Mind you though it may not have flooded with no cam signal. May have had no injectors firing in this case. Depends on the type of system your car has.
I'd clear the codes and give her a good run and keep the fingers crossed otherwise it's plug a scanner in time. Depending where you go $$$$. I guess you guys in the US have Auto Zone who offer to check for free. That's pretty cool. Maybe they can shed further light on any extra problems. Have a great day!!

I took it for a long drive and the check engine light is still on. My husband did a self diagnostics test and it showed the knock and oxygen sensors were coming up as not working well. The knock sensor is about $ 160.00 and the oxygen sensor is around $80.00. Wow ! I guess I won't be changing them anytime soon. Do you have to reset anything after changing a sensor ? Thanks for your help.

In changing the sensor, in most cases you need a scanner to get the light out, but not totally sure on maximas. Disconnecting the battery...perhaps. But with OBDII a drive cycle has to be duplicated with the problem not evident for the light to go out on its own.
The drive cycle is performed in a certain time frame with the car accelerating, cruising, coasting and slowing down. Bit of a mess I call it. Sometimes you get lucky and the drive cycle is done without you even realizing and poof out goes the light, but honestly if you want it out right away (after repairs), scanner the best way to go IMHO. Goodluck!

i am having the same problem. I drove my car from grocery store, parked it in the garage, and next day when i woke up and tried starting it, and it wouldnt start :( i checked the battery and it was fine. Do nissans have common problem with cam position sensor? btw: engine light had been on for about couple weeks.
