a way to tell if it is a 3/4 ton or a 1/2 ton is but the lugz, a 5 lug is 1/2 ton for 2wd and a six lug is 1/2 ton for 4x4, an eight lug is a 3/4 ton, 2wd or 4wd. and it is kind of a bitch to chang the bed, if it has saddlebag gas tanks the you have to pull those, along with the wiring for the tail lights, etc...

The only way to put the shorter 6.5 bed on a truck made for 8' is to shorten the frame so that you can get the wheels to line up with the wheel wells. You would need to cut the frame somewhere between the cab and rear axle.

No problemo. I am sorta in the same situation as you. I have a 1980 3/4 crew cab 4x4 that I am completely re-doing and cant seem to make up my mind what to do about the bed. Sometimes I think it would be cool to put an aluminum flat bed or maybe keep the stock long bed and add dually fender extensions (turn it into a dually), or cut and shorten the frame and add the short bed box and to make it even a harder choice I thought last night about putting the 8' stepside bed on it just to be WAY different.....too many options and minimal brain cells to make a decision with....lol
