I am seriously lookin into getten a cold air intake for my crx but im just wondering if there is really a drastic horse power difference from stock to ebay cai. i would also like to know if there is much of a hp difference between ebay cai or aem. im wondering if aem is all its cracked up to be...thanks

Ebay intake should be fine, just put a k&n filter on it to replace the one that comes with it

yup. the filter that comes with an ebay one is usually not that good of a filter. just go buy a k&N cone filter for it.

Where would i go about buying a k&n? How much?

I think Napa or advanced, or prety much any auto parts store should have the k&n filter, i am not sure on the price though, they shouldnt be to much

well.......it all depends on how u have the CAI set-up, because ebay intakes along with most other intakes have it set-up to where the filter is right next to the batter, and thats not giving u power, it is most likely taking away power because of all that ht air it is sucking in from the engine. Most CAI's only are effective when you use a extension. This extension will put the filter out of sight under the car, this way u get beter air flow and better power. I would suggest a AEM intake because they make a bypass valve that does this where as if u by a ebay intake u will be doing something custom

What CAI will fit the 4dr LX. all the ones I have seen say they won't fit.

What?! Its just a damn tube! They're all the same.
The proper info has been covered.. The main thing that seperates a generic CAI and an AEM is the K&N filter.. Just get the cheapy and spend some extra money on a K&N.
AEM also has a powdercoat on it to make it shiny and attract people to buying them. It probably helps keep the temps down a little bit, but nothing big enough to make a difference. If you wanted you could powdercoat the Ebay CAI, or thermal wrap it.
As far as the bypass valve load that he just said.. You can use the AEM bypass valve on your cheap-o intake, they're just tubing sizes, just make sure you buy the right diameter one.

a bypass valve is more crap AEM tries to sell you. If it rains a lot, take the CAI extension off and put it back on later. it takes about 2 minutes.
so what does the bypass valve really do? It sucks hot air from inside your engine bay through it. :screwy:

I think the bypass valve is good.. Its like having a spare hole in your straw just incase you start to suck up some liquid, it will just get air through the hole. Its cheap for a little peace of mind.
But it doesn't have to be on an AEM intake.. Or even an AEM bypass valve. (I assume someone has to have a knock off by now)

:iagree: You never know if its goings to downpour out of nowhere. I really like the bypass vavle. Even if it does take away that .5 hp or whatever, I'm not even sure if I believe that, its better than a hydrolocked engine.

lol...a CAI is Cold Air Intake, which means it has the extension that puts it under the car. A short ram intake, SRI, has the filter sitting next to the battery. So, a Ebay CAI isn't any worse than an AEM, just needs to use a better filter

No Shit, look, i wasn't saying to run out and buy a AEM intake, im saying is that from what i heard they offer the best. I personally do have a cheap - o intake with a K&N Filter. And i bought my intake off ebay, it sits next to the battery, and what i am trying to say is that i don't think it does any better because it is right next to the engine

They do have a knockoff bypass valve. Some guy on eBay sells them for $15 on top of the intake price. As for its quality...who knows... but I dont think it would be hard to make a "hole in straw."

For everyone's information...there are technically 3 types of intakes...
1. Cold air intake-the filter is located outside of the engine bay creating more horsepower.*HP gains are usually 0-2 on a DX and 5+ HP for an SI
**Please read below
2. Ram air intake-the filter is located to it's stock position usually in front of the passenger headlight on our civics but usually has larger in diameter tubing than stock. This is called "Ram" because the filter is placed directly where air flow is maximed which is why many people remove their headlight when drag racing or you can also have a hood scoop placed over the filter. HP gains are usually from 2-5 HP
3. Short Ram air-the tubing is usually only 1-2 feet long and is actually usually shorter tubing than your stock intake. It has less restrictions and better filtering than your stock Intake. HP gains are usually from 0-2 HP
*A CAI has little or no gain on a 4th gen civic dx because of the DPFI injection. The DPFI injection reacts very poorly to the CAI because of only the two injectors. By increasing the airflow with a CAI on a DPFI intake, you will cause the engine to bog down when stepping heavily on the throttle because the engine will get too much air and not enough fuel. I heard this and I also know this for a fact as I used to have a AEM CAI on my 88 dx. When I stepped on the pedal, the car would bog down because of it getting too much air. I have found that it actually decreases your HP on a dx because you will be unable to press the peddle fully down. Also...on a DX with DPFI, you may screw up your MAP sensor and TPS sensor as I did by just adding a CAI. I have found that the DX reacts best to the Ram intake located behind the headlight. Another note is that alot of cars, not just civics, that dragrace know that the ram intake is better if you remove your headlight than a CAI. On the civic Si though, you can expect good power gains from a CAI.
**HP gains are from what I've seen on other civics. Your results may vary
