I know this is like the biggest newbie question ever, but how do I go about doing a nice burnout? Please be as detailed as possible. I have always wanted to do one but since I didn't know exactly how to, I was always afraid I was going to break the car. By the way, I have an '01 GT 5 speed. Thanks for the help guys.

with the clutch in rev it up to like 4k. drop the clutch and grab the brake right away. this was taught to me by a professional racer. just remember though the more burnouts you do your clutch and diff are gonna die a lot sooner.

The question needed to be asked here is are you burning out because you just want to look cool or for a real actual purpose?

I am looking to take my stang down to the track this weekend (weather permitting) and would like to be able to do a burnout before my runs. I have been stuck behind way too many asses who like to do burnouts while waiting on a red light to become one of othem.

Just a word of advice, you only need to do a burnout if you are using drag radials or slicks. Doing smokies on street radials will just make the rubber hard and wear them out, plus they get greasy when they are overheated and as a result hurt your launch. At the most you just want to spin them a little to scrub off any dirt or debris.
To do it with a 5-spd, you'll have to do something like a clutch dump and then get on the brakes immediately. Getting a linelock will greatly simplify it. Its a solenoid valve that goes between your master cylinder and front brakes. You lock your brakes, turn on the linelock, then let off and it locks your fronts while letting the rears freewheel for the burnout.

Basically what he said, getting a line-loc makes life times easier in a standard. Also with street tires you just wanna rip em of quick to clean dirt and debris off no reason to do anymore.

Put your foot on the brake and mash it all the way to the floor like your trying to push your foot through the floor. Give it about half to 3/4 throttle and wait for the boost gauge to hit 10 or 12 PSI. and relase a little bit of pressure off the brakes and watch the smoke rise in your rearview mirror as your car stays in one place.
P.S. I know he was asking about a mustang but I thought I might just be a littebit of a smart a$$ just for good humor  .

Hold a rev at 6k, drop the clutch, let the tires spin a sec to bring back up the rpms, then lightly hold the brakes.
I can't do it though.... Bullitt brakes own me.

BTW, i dont have a clutch, is that good or bad?

You people tach way to high just for a little 'ol burnout, Plus you side-step the clutch to much!
Geeess.....It's not that hard if your car has enough humpf behind it. Tack @3300 eas the clutch out as the car start's to roll forward mash the gas, release the clutch and apply the brakes lightly. You just have to be really fast at don't hammer the brake pedal. You have to FEEL the clutch grab and the car roll just a bit then as fast as you push down the gas pedal release the clutch and grab the brake. Or you could brake with the heel of your right foot while using the toe of your right foot to tack around 3300 and then release the clutch, But that's just damn hard to do.

Good point. Here is my answer
1 Clean the tyres before a race
2 Show that you got RWD (I HATE RICERS WITH FWD)
3 Girls here love to see some raw power and hear some noise
4 SOme people worm up their tyres before a race
Is that enough?

So how would you do a burnout in an automatic? Do you hold the brake in and hit the gas?

Bingo. Hold that brake in all the way and gently apply some gas. Once you get your revs where you want them, let off the brake and hit the gas the rest of the way.
There is a thing that people should realize here. If you rev your engine to low during a burn out the thing will launch forward. It's just a word of advice if you have a wall right in front of you or something. If you have your revs close to red line then you're going to pretty much sit there.

So hold the brake in, apply gas at low revs and then let go of the gas?
I want to try to burnout on a late 90s automatic BMW, but I don't want to ruin the car.

Power Brake it. Left foot on the brake pedal, while mashing the gas pedal with your right foot.
