Hello, I have a civic SiR. I know I dont belong here but I have a question, a friend is looking into buying a mustang. He is thinking of running it in the 1/4 mile. Would he be better off buying a 2001-02 mustang gt or buying a 96-97 Gt and dropping the left over money into the engine? dont know exact specificacions I just know that they vary about 40 horses, 220-260 somethin like that, any other suggestions? he wants to buy a mustang but he doesent know exactly what to do, his budget is around 19,000 dollars.

I'd go with the 02. He should be able to pick a used one up for that price with a little cash left over, plus it will still be under warrenty.

Whats the displacement and power difference, and weight?

First off, youre always welcome here if your intentions are not to troll. :)

Now, the 96-98 Gts can be bought pretty cheap but are lacking in power when compared to the 99+ Gts. 96-98s usually put down around 185+ rwhp. The 99+ put down around 225+rwhp mainly because of the PI (Performance Improved) heads/cams.

If you like the 96-98 body style better than the 99s, theres a way you can make up the loss of power by buying a pair of PI heads and/or cams from a 99+ GT. If you do go that route youll more than likely pick up more than 40 RWHP. The only downside to this is the compression rises to somewhere around 10.2- 10.5:1, which is something you dont want if youre planning to go with a power-adder. Then again, if your friend wants to go N/A, itll benefit him :dunno:

Hope that helps :)

What about putting the 32v quad cam Cobra heads on, say, a '96 4.6? There arent any problems doing that, right? If so, I'd be inclined to get an older mod motor 'Stang and put the saved money into a beastly engine. On the other hand, those '99+ cars look alot better...

96-02 NA Cobras, imo, are the best way to go if you want a modular mustang.

But if you want a GT, get a 98 or a 99. The 98 is the last of the first gen SN95 cars, with 225hp and you can pick one up rather cheap, do the head swap, and still be able to beat the 99+. If you get a 99, you'll get the first of the second gen SN95s with a baseline of 260hp and alot of speed.

Happy hunting.

It doesn't bolt right on. You are better off with the SOHC head, or a complete engine swap.

The 4v heads do bolt right up; you just have to get all the other accessory pieces to it.

Its a long, tedious process.

It's a waste of time cause you might as well get a used 4V motor you need so many parts.
