Part id

Just kind of curious, I broke a part off my head the other day, its basically a small 3/4" metal cylinder attached to the upper timing belt cover with a single wire coming out of it. The wire popped off, I took it in to get a new one and was told it was just a noise suppressor, just looking for confirmation.
