We just had a very cool Flag Retreat ceremony here at work, where all employees that are active or former members of the armed forces were invited to participate in a little parade. The flags (US and California) were lowered to the national anthem, then afterwards, while they were folding them, a quartet sang the hymn for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. It was very cool.

So...

:salute: and Thank You to all the service men and women out there; American or otherwise...

Sounds like a nice ceremony. We just took my dad out for dinner and took a drive to the cemetary and saw the flags placed by the VFW.

Veterans' Day[or Armistice day in some countries] is celebrated on the 11th November, the final day of the First World War.The Armistice was signed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, and signalled an end to what was known as The Great War.One of the most significant pieces of propaganda of the era was that it was'the war to end all wars'.How sad that it were not true.

I took time out to spend a few minutes with some good friends who are forever young, and reflected on the stupidity of war.It always seems to me that the keenest supporters of any military action are those furthest from the fighting. What a pity that the wisest and kindest never end up running nations. We allow the pompous, the stupid, the greedy and the bigoted to run our affairs for us,and then wonder why there is never any peace.

This year at the newspaper we did our part by not inciting the veterans and their wives to riot.

A year ago, a new employee ran an anti-war cartoon on the Opinion page, without even looking at it. That's common at newspapers - if it fits in the hole, you run it. 3 people looked at that page and that cartoon and didn't see anything wrong. I think everyone had forgotten the next day was Veterans' Day.

The next morning a whole crowd of little old ladies and gents picketed us! My parents were pissed off until I explained - "We didn't even look at the comic! It fit in the box so we used it!". The retirees all cancelled their subscriptions and promptly re-subscribed a week later.

Seriously, this week there was a very nice parade in town and we're running 20-something pictures of all the activities.

Thanks to all those who have defended and are defending our country.
