two colors on car work flow

I have a mini-z body that is silver and I want to paint it with red like the 206 WRC. I wanted to know what is the best way to make a mask like that, or is it a decal on the kit?

I was thiking of drawing the mask on the the tape, cut it an apply it to the car, then sand the exposed part and prime and paint.

When building a model do I paint the entire car one color and then paint over as described above?

your idea sounds like the standard way of doing it... and yes, it's better to paint the whole car with one color, then do the second color

Are you keeping the silver already on the body, then masking off areas, then painting the red? Because if you are painting both the colours, it is easier to do the lighter colour first.

Ohh, and if you are keeping the silver, do you know what type of paint it is? Because some differnet types of paint react with each other.

I would be using Tamiya Laquers, but I am sure what the mini z bodies are painted with. I have an old body I can test this on. But yes, I want to keep the already painted from factory silver on the car and paint over it. So the parts I want to paint I was going to sand off to the plastic and prime and paint.
