Anyone happen to have a tool to do the valves for sale or rent? Preferable somwhere in MI. Just thought I'd ask before deciding to take the head in.

I hadn't tried autozone specifically, but the parts store I was at quoted me 300 something. I'm looking for the retainer lock remover so I can get at the valve seals. The service manual shows some sort of weird tool.

yea i would try auto zone cause i know it will be cheaper than $300+ dollars for a parts store to do it...if auto zone doesnt have it maybe try an engine shop or just try any auto shop in general... with a down payment i'm sure that they will be willing to lend it to you, atleast thats the way they are around here...MN

YOu just need a valve srpinf compressor. The only thing holding the keepers in is the spring tension. Compress the spring, whack it with a hammer and they pop loose. There are two type of tools. One is for the head off, the other is with the head on. I believe the special tool you saw may hav beenthat one. ITs a bit easier with the head off though, sicne you dont have to worry about dropping valves into the cyinder... ;) There is a vfaq on how to make a tool for doing it with the head on.

Yeah, I was hoping to just do it with the head on, I rigged up a thing running some compressed air into the cylinders thorugh the spark plug holes, so I'm hoping that'll keep the valves up, that and I'm keeping the pistons at tdc when I do them.

DSMers are a crafty bunch, but to give credit where its due, Muscle Car guys have been doing that since we were all still shitting in our pants :icon16:

Actually you want to hit the spring with the hamer before you compress it.

Plus have a pen magnet handy, the keepers easliy fall down to the bottom of the head
