In progress Mazdaspeed RX7with tribal flames

I've been suffering from modellers block lately and been kicking around the idea of trying to do some graphics as a challenge and to try something different. Anyhow I think the attached might work - don't know if I can pull it off but I'll give it a try :naughty: .

Thanks for the comments guys - I'm touched by your faith in me - just hope I can do a decent job on it.
What I did was find a graphics site with example tribal flame graphics, printed them off, scanned them and played about resizing until I got the right size and printed it off again (theres probably a quicker way of doing it)- so unfortunately it's not vinyl just paper stuck on to get some idea of how it would look. I'll have to make a template and either :-
(1) Cut the design out using friskitt tape or
(2) Cover the body with tamiya tape, draw the outline of the design and cut it out - the danger I can see with this method is cutting through to into the base coat.
Haven't really thought about colours - ghost flames would be cool but I've haven't tried that before either - still it's all about trying different things - if I mess up I mess up ! theres always brake fluid !
Anyway I think I'll practice on the Estima first as it's a bit bigger.

the way i use to transfer the cut tribal to the car is as follows.

1: print off shape as needed in both reversed and normal. (for each side)

2: place a piece of clear acitate (clear plastic sheet) over the top

3: with a pen trace the outline onto the acitate.

4: flip the acitate over and place a layer 40mm tamiya tape over it

5: with a scalpel cut out the shape needed

6: place another layer of tape over the top to lift off the stencil

7: place the tape onto the car and position

8: remove the top layer of tape and your left with the perfect tribal logo.

9: press all the areas down.

10: lightly airbrush paint over the top

well i had a steep curve with my sti

the blue i used was too thick and hadnt adhered to the silve well enough. made it peel off.

Decided on the colour - Tamiya chrome yellow - it's the first time I've used tamiya paint and I'm impressed. Having trouble making a mask for the tribal flames but if I manage it ok I'm thinking of spraying them purple pearl.

Slight change of plan - as there's not much room on the sides of the RX7 because of the body kit plus cutting a mask out of frisket tape proved impossible - decided to go with the graphic on the hood & roof using Tamiya masking tape. Here it is - a bit rough in places and I used testor grape pearl so will have to wait a while before clearcoating. :uhoh:

Which way did ya go on masking off the tribal?

I tried flames once (will probably try agin soon) but here is how I did it.

I had an old sheet of Parma flames that had been used for R/C. I took the old sheet scanned it in and resized them down. I took a new sheet of blank mask from Parma and printed them out on that. Here is where I ran into problems...the ink wouldn't dry on the mask. I used an exacto to cut them out and lay them down. Towards the end I rushed and just wanted to be done with it, so it dosen't look all that great.

It's ok Steve I haven't built the suspension yet - the wheels are just resting on the wheel wheels at the mo.

It's been driving me mad :banghead: but in the end I traced round a template on to Tamiya masking tape - a bit time consuming but I think it hasn't turned out too bad - will need to clearcoat it once the paint has fully cured to even the paint levels out.

Alittle bit of progress-added the black window trim and sprayed the interior Humbrol Matt Yellow (154) - the seat & door panel inserts will be yellow - the rest will be matt purple.

Only a little bit of progress - window trim now painted - thanks to Hiroboy for the masking template thread :) - am going to use SAS GT wing as the one in the kit is :uhoh:.The wing will be yellow as I want the tips of the flames from the roof to continue on to the wing.

I'll mask the yellow inserts and then spray everything else satin black. Hope to get this and the Skyline completed over Xmas/new year as I have 11 days off :lol2:

I was a bit dubious about the color combo at first but's it's coming together great! Looks like you're much better at putting SAS wings together than I am... I find them damned fiddly to work with but they do look excellent when done!

How did you make the tribal flames?

How did you make the tribal flames?
It's a bit long winded but this is how I did it:-
1) Sketch design
2) Scan into computer - copy & flip the image so it's the same both sides.
3) Print off to use as a template
4) Put 2 strips of widest tamiya masking tape on a piece of glass and tack template behind the glass - trace round template onto the tape & then cut out the design with a new X-Acto blade .
5) Remove the tape from the glass and you've got your mask - then just spray preferably with airbrush as you can build up the paint slowly.

Hope that makes sense :)

I usually just apply the tape to at least 1 week dried paint, litely draw an outline with pencil of a stencil (btw, file folders, the manilla ones, they make great stencils) onto the tape, and cut out with new blade. But besure not to leave the paint too long before removing the mask.

Whaaaa? Oh that's right, your in the UK. I'm in the US, LSU, purple and gold, but it's really a yellow color. We're going to the sugar bowl baby!


BTW, andy, awesome interior, and them rims, look sooo much better with that lip on them.
