Hey all,

I have a 2000 Hyundai Elantra and at about 120km/h the car shakes/vibrates but at a lower speed it's fine and the vibration stops 140 km/h. Has anyone had this or have any ideas on what could be causing this?

I've had the very same problem with my 2000 elantra. My mechanic did a wheel balancing and alignment, which helped reduce the problem, however I still dectect a little vibration at those speeds, but not continuously anymore. I'll post if and when I get completely rid of the problem.

If you're getting shakes and vibrations at those speeds, it's probably the cop shaking your car to roll down your window!

...IF HYUNDAI CANADA WOULD MAKE A BLOODY DECISION!!! I've been waiting for four weeks now. What they are doing is figuring out whether or not replacing ALL FOUR STEEL WHEELS is covered by my HPP warranty.

I asked them why they wanted to replace all the wheels and they said "for the vibration". Once that gets done, I'll see what happens and let you all know.

Update....Hyundai called me and they are replacing all four steel wheels and covers, since I had the old plastic ones. This is covered under the HPP warranty plan apparently but now I have to wait as they have to order them and so it will be next week.

Appears I was wrong about the time frame. It took them a week to get the wheels in and then ANOTHER week to find an open timeslot to do the work! Apparently, some of their techs were on vacation and they are short staffed. Must be nice. I hope their techs are having fun abroad seeing as I had to cancel my plans to travel because I've been waiting TWO months to get this fixed!

Hyundai has lost a customer in me in the future as well as my parents who are in the market for a new vehicle and WERE going to get a Sonata. They're staying with Ford now because of all this garbage.

Needless to say, I have left Hyundai Canada a voicemail to call me back and/or have the national customer relations manager call me back about this. Guess what...no callbacks.

I haven't had the work done yet. It goes in this coming Thursday morning. When I call the 800 number, I never get a live person...only the voicemail system. But I quoted Chess' name on it.

Well, they replaced all four steel wheels with a newer model and new caps. The thumping in the rear braking system is a groove in the drum which they can't get fixed until next week. GO FIGURE!!! It takes what...pop the wheel off, pop the drum off, slap it on the lathe, machine it, and put 'er all back together. Boom! Done. but nooooooo...not for Hyundai! ARGH!!!!!

If you are still under the HPP warranty, they should be. Mine were.

Update: I got my 2001 Elantra VE back from the shop yesterday and they machined the rear rotors. MUCH better now. Vibration is gone and clunking is gone. There was a rust ridge on the rotor as the previous owner rarely drove the car. Remember, I bought the car this past May and it only had 11,500 kms on it and it's a 2001. But, they told me that they detected a pulsing (slight) in the front rotors. I said "No way". Forget that. I'm happy with the car now, but not the poor poor service Hyundai provided.

The TSB I listed is an actual Hyundai Technical Service Bulletin. This TSB campaign all dealerships should have in their TSB Knowledge base...I haven't heard of anybody in the USA getting this comp'd under warranty...But in the below threads it appears our friends to the North have been able to get Hyundai of Canada to do this...

Oh good grief! Guess what! The shaking is back. It only happens at around 80 kph. All steel wheels were replaced and the rear rims were machined. The front rims also need to be machined so I may do them and see what happens. I'm really starting to think this car is a lemon and that sucks because I really like it.
