If it says VTEC then it is an Si-R with a b16a1....Notice Moppie's car. It is a hatch but still has the 'Civic VTEC' in the center section and an Si-R badge on the hatch lid.
The JDM Si was the recipient of the ZC (also some JDM Integra XSi's?? I believe of the same vintage)
I am sure someone else has more details but I HTH! -

88-89 JDM civic/crx Si-> came with the ZC
90-91 JDM civic/crx SiR-> came with the b16a hence the DOHC Vtec badging
And like stanley said some tegs of this generation came with the b16 DOHC Vtec. I can't remember which ones exactly. Hey Moppie can you provide us some insight here.:D

Ok, here we go,
Worshp can you please fill in any gaps.
CRX models:
13x Dual carb 1300cc, slow as a constipated horse fly
15x Dual carb 1500cc not slow, but not all that fast either
Si, ahhh, now were talking, Worshps CRX, DOHC Fuel injected ZC powered!
SiR, drooooool, B16a baby, DOHC VTEC!
Civic Models:
23x same as the CRX 13x
25x Ditto the CRX 15x
33x Ditto the 23x but a four door
35x Ditto the 15x but also a four door.
Si, avliable in Hatch and 4 door, same as the CRX Si.
SiR, my car! Hatch only, same as the CRX SiR
Then with in the 15x-35x models are xx and xl and special and limtied edition models that have differnce's that range from trim levels, to body mouldings, to some of the last Hatchs produced which used the Raised style hood form the SiR, and SiR style mags but still have the 1300 or 1500cc engine crapy brakes and suspension.
And all the CRXs made in 1991 have the raised SiR Style frount end, and are known as the face lifted models, The Si's Even retian the bonnet bulge nessacry on the old stlye bonnet, but purly comsmetic on the Face lifted ones. (and to tell them apart, but unforunatly it looks UGLY!)
I have never seen a SOHC injected EF Civic or CRX from Japan, but I believe some were sold over here, under the GL name badge?
(Worshp you know more about the Kiwi Hondas that I do)
There were to Integras with the B16a the Xsi and Rsi, the Rsi is ment to be lighter and does have tighter ratio Gear box.

Moppie has pretty much summed it up. The Aussie GL was actually an export EFI 1600 from Japan, not domestic. It had the 1500 twin-carb on some markets, 1500 single carb on others. Body shape wasn't JDM, closer to the USDM, but RHD. It was replaced by the 1600 carbed and EFI in late 91 (very few EFI hit the Aussie shores though). One or two came out with the XT25 JDM raised bonnet.

This is correct, however I am pretty sure there was never a 13x version of the CRX in the JDM market.
There were also a few other models including the 36i which was the four door ZC powered version, plus the XT, which was pretty much a more luxury version of the 35X....there was also a very base version in 3 and 4 door called the 23L
I don't think we have enough space to list ALL the versions...there were sooooo many!!!
NZ new models included the GTi (which was SOHC D16A6 powered) which was the only injected version NZ ever got new....and the LX and L versions of both sedan and hatch. The CRX was never sold here NZ New.

I just stumbled across this thread and thought I would respond, sorry for the length of this but thought I may be able to help as there seems to be a lot of incorrect information about JDM specs on the net.
This covers JDM models of the EF series (1988 to 1991)

WTF is a Civic Shuttle? Is that like a taxi or small bus?
There were never many Civic Wagons sold here either...They just don't catch on real well...they were AWD, and tall, raised up, and ugly as hell...but I do think the 6-speed tranny would be awesome!! Wonder what the gear ratios of that thing were? It would fit a d-series engine wouldn't it? Didn't the 'Wagonvans' have a d16a6 ?

Welcome to PH!!!!
So you drive a twin carb CRX....my sis had one until she wrote it off, but I was suprised at how well it went!
The HP figures you posted are actually in PS, which is the japanese power figure....1hp =approx .987PS, so the hp figures are slightly less than quoted. Also the 1990-1991 facelift also occurred in 1989 for both civic and crx...my sisters 1989 EF6 CRX was the facelift model, and I happened to swap all the facelift pieces over onto my CRX!!!;)

*NOTE:
1.SiR models were only introduced in late 1989.
2.For the 1990-91 years, ALL Civic Hatch and CR-X models were fitted with the new front, not just the SiR (as is very commonly believed)
this data is very accurate and has been sourced from Honda Japan.
Peace.
:)

Worship: you are right, the facelift occured at the same time the SiR was introduced, in September 1989. correct me if I am wrong but this would probably be refered to as the '1990 year of manufacture', (as the 2nd gen CR-X was introduced in Sep 1987)
Aslo good point about the PS and HP difference, I remember reading on Temple of Vtec Asia about that, PS is just over 1% bigger than HP, so the specs would only be significantly different for the B16A and DOHC ZC. (I spend ages compiling that list and coudn't be bothered to calculate them, but I guess I should have pointed that out) sorry.
My CR-X goes pretty well for a 1.5, the suspension setup is the same as the Si except for no rear sway bar, A quick trip to the wreckers solved that and made the rear so much better.
Wagon=Shuttle as Moppie said, they were made for quite a while, until late 1995. There were quite a few models, here is a pic of a 1995 Shuttle 'Beagle' in stock form. (Note: price is in NZ Dollars)
Also as Moppie said there are many versions of the models I listed earlier, with 'EXTRA' and 'Limited', but this only refers to trim specs, cup holders, etc.

The facelift is commonly referred to as the 1990-91 shape as it helps to differentiate the change over. also as you correctly pointed out the Civic and CRX were introduced in Spet 1987...i once owned a '87 Si Civic which was the new shape.
PS and HP are so close, which is why people never bother translating it...but I think effectively the B16A1 had 155hp, while the ZC had 127hp.
Good to see you on this board...the 71-91 Civic and CRX forum was the nicest on purehonda, and will always be the nicest on automotive forums!!!

As I recollect, there were 2 shuttles - one based on the 3G civic floorpan and the other on the 4G. I drove a 3G Shuttle with AWD - it was sweet. I have a feeling that the 4G may have come out with it as well, but I'm not sere. I do remember a Sydney motorshow c1990 where they had an AWD Shuttle and a 4WS 'lude on their sides to display the technology.

Here is where I get all the JDM info, It is a really good site, takes a bit of imagination and trial and error sometimes as not all things get translated properly. (fortunately it provides a picture of the car)
But basically it covers ALL cars sold on the Japanese market (inculding European, US, UK makes) form 1989 until now.
It is very detailed, it lists everything about all cars (i.e. what options there were for each model, colours, all performance and economy specs, and the price of the car)
you need to use the altavista/babelfish translator.
http://babelfish.altavista.com/
here is the site
http://autos.yahoo.co.jp/ucar/
Setana listed the official Honda site, but unfortunately it does not cover all models, which can be annoying.
When I found it a few months ago, I spent ages looking around it.
(very useful for people in NZ who are interested in buying a used import and want to know exactly what and how good it is)
BTW: In japan a civic is refered to as a 'ti Bick' (i have no idea why)
Hope this is of some use..

Sure, no prob.
Yes that is a pic of the Civic Shuttle, the Wagon just looks like a Sedan with a wagon back instead of a boot. There not very big, and are VERY rare, Iv only ever seen one.
Cool, a 4th gen I didn't even know existed! wonder what it looks like.
So a SiR is actually 160ps which means 158hp....hmm, maybe you should change your sig :D
EF6_CR-X, nice link, it really got all the info. It's the first time I searched for a Honda 'ti Bick' :D

I seem to recollect that the CRX was a ballad or some such in Japan when it first came out. Unless my memory is playing tricks on me. Nice Links BTW :)

Yep all the 1st gen JDM CR-X's were called "Ballade Sports" (i'm sure this was the same elsewhere as well), similarly the second generation were nicknamed "Cyber Sports" and then the "Del Sol" but all 3 generations of JDM CR-X's were called CR-X. Unlike in the states where its just 'Del Sol'.
The first gens came in 3 models from Japan: 1.3 carb, 1.5 injected, 1.6 DOHC injected.

I'm going to wing this one, but the d16a9 is a DOHC engine right? In which case it is simply the last genesis of the ZC. Our CRXs only came in DOHC and had either a ZC or d16a in them - both were the same engine despite the designation on the engine. The ZC/d16a then carried over into our EG Civics in Si trim.
Hope this helps

I got to drive one of the 4wd wagons. The 6-spd tranny was fucking badass. Didnt buy that car cause of high miles and a couple of other issues, and it was top heavy as a mother. Would have been a nice car though.
How come the US never gets any good cars. I hella would shmob a SI 4dr or an SIR hatch. We also get the watered down version of the mitsubishi lancer, and not the evolution.
