rear end conversions

i have a 93 civic ex with drum brakes in the rear. i would like to convert to disc brakes but dont know what parts are necessary or how hard the conversion is. if anyone has a some suggestions, i would really appreciate it. thanx.

I was wondering this too. I don't have $1,800 to spend on a 4 wheel disc 5-lug conversion kit, so will Si rear discs somehow just bolt on? As for the '93 Civic question above, will the same work for his? Was there an Si or other model with rear discs?

i've heard, but don't know if it is true, that the integra disk brakes will fit right onto the same year civic.

Ok all, here's the answer. Integra brakes will swap right on. You will need to entire rear integra brake assembly, the praking brake cable, etc. It will bolt right on. Also, EX disc brakes, or the Si disc brake will work too. If you swap drums to discs, you'll want to change to the approrate master cylinder and proportaning vavle. For a 93, get a 92-95 EX non-abs master cylinder and proporationing vavle (not the ABS one) if your car is non-abs. As for a 93 EX with drums in the rear, that seems wrong. 92-95 EX civic's came with rear wheel disc brakes. But no matter, like a said. Get either the Ingtera, EX, or Si rear brake assembly, it will bolt right on. There you go, 4 wheel disc brake. Should be around $500 for the swap, much more affrodable than that awful $1800 4 wheel disc 5 lug conversion. Parts will be cheaper to replace too. It will cost extra to get the master cylinder and proportioning vavle and to put them on, though it shouldn't be hard to do.

I thought they all did. I was pretty sure in 5th gen 92-95 civic's, all the EX's came with rear disc's. Only some of the LX's did, none of the DX's. In the hatchs, the DX and CX did not, only the Si hatch did. I assumed it held true for 96-00, all EX's, only some LX's. But you too say you know of EX's woth drums, so thats odd. I know I have never seen and EX with drums. I'll check it out in the next few days and post what I find. Still, if you have drums and are looking for discs, they rear brake assembly from the cars listed above should bolt directly on to give you rear discs. If your EX doesn't have discs, get the rear assmebly from one that did, or any of the other cars I listed, and bolt it right on.

You are welcome. I don't know where you are located, but there is a "warehouse" of exclusivly Honda and Acura parts in Portland. They have virtually everything you can think of. I know they ship nationwide, and their prices are reasonable on a lot of things (not sure on the brake conversion, lol) If you can't find anyone locally where you are at, you can try them. The whole rear brake assembly from the EX rear disc car can be used to convert your 2 door to rear disc brakes. Read above, it applies. Si, Integra, or Civic EX rear disc brake assmebly will work to convert your 2 door brakes to discs.

So the ABS does not make a diff?......I see nobody asking about the ABS being a factor in the swap.

This is the kit that I started to put together last year, got them all installed and brakes blead then found that the bearing in them were shot and needed to be replaced, I just havent had time to repack them yet and install them.

I know that Auto Adventure should have it. Last time I was there they had them. They ship nationwide, and have a huge selection of stuff. I've bought stuff from them before, and they were real helpful. Of course, I live never them, so I just drove there. Still, I know they'll have it, and they do ship. So if you run out of options, you can give them a shot.

Ok I have been doing the rear swap.....Heres where I am now. I took the rear assembly from a 92 ABS 4 door civic...All bolted up perfect. I then got a 40/40 proportioning valve. Now I am in search of the correct mater cylinder... I have heard conflicting comments on this.....Some say I need the brak booster and others say I do not....Here is a link to one I have seen on eBay....

The set-up I am using is the big Tenzo brake kits front and rear, EBC greenstuff pads, steel braided lines, Dropzone shocks with coilovers and energy suspension bushing throughout the entire car.

Integra Master cylinders won't always bolt right up. I would get it with the brake booster too if it was me, just get it as a whole package. If you don't need it in the end, you don't. I don't know how that Integra master cylinder will bolt up exactly though, though it may not be a direct bolt on like an EX master cylinder/booster. I know the 94+ Integra one didn't directly bolt up to a civic that swaped it on (not sure if the civic was 92+ or 96+) after GSR rear discs had been swapped on. Just thought I'd throw the possibilty out there for you. He did fit it, but it took a little bit of creative modification.

You can use del sol or integra rear brakes, the only things you have to worry about are the proportion valve and the e-brake. Other than that it's direct bolt up.

My 93 EX has rear drums also...so does my friend's 93 EX....

I didn't change my master cylinder?? Whoops! Actually I don't think you have to change that. I have a proportioning valve from an integra......it'll work you've just got to change the upper valve from the 9 to the 4 that your car comes with. Make an offer, and it yours.

Okay, you must have not read the entire theard...not ALL EX's have rear drums. It seems the ones with ABS have disc brakes on the rear, while the non-abs ones seem to have drums. Some EX's did come with disc brakes though, it just seems to be the ABS civic's that had disc breaks in the rear for the most part. But no, not all have drums.

Oh, you don't NEED the master cylinder for the others...you NEED the proportioning valve though...however, whole your at it, the master cylinder is a good idea...as the civics with rear drums have a smaller master cylinder than any civic or teg twith rear discs.
