I hava an 88 gmc suburban w/5.7l v-8. and recently it began bucking
during accelaration. This problem seems intermittent as sometimes it runs fine. I suspect fuel pump but before I drop the tank, I was hoping for maybe another idea.
As I begin to accelarate it will run fine untill the pedal is about 25% pressed then it starts to miss, not one cyl but like the key is disconnected for a split second. If I back off the pedal it quits. If I press the pedal further it pops and sputters then races.
Any ideas please help

If bucking is fairly hard, it could be your torque converter failing. Common on that vintage.

Are you certain that your fuel pump is in the tank? On my 86 Chevy Suburban the fuel pump is mounted on the engine, not it the tank. I think Suburbans may have changed significantly between 87 and 88 so yours might very well be in the tank. What I can tell you for certain is that I get very similar bucking when the fuel pump is in the process of failing, which is often a slow death. This I know well because I've replaced the fuel pump at least three times. The fact that this thing eats fuel pumps is one of my very few complaints about the vehicle.
