H22a in a 93 Del Sol

Hello all!
I'm new here, but I come with a load of questions. I have a 93 Del Sol Si, so it has the D16z6 1.6L SOHC V-TEC, and I hunger for speed. I was thinking that an H22a, bored out, built up, port/polished, balanced and blueprinted, with a Jackson Racing supercharger to top it off would do nicely. But I've been curious if a long block THAT massive would even fit in my little car.
Now, I've heard that I could save myself money and get the same gains out of a B16a.... I have my doubts :sly: .... I've also heard, that SPOON parts give amazing power gains, but no-one has defined 'amazing' to me yet. I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me some info.

To answer a *few* of your questions.... yes an H22 will fit in your sol... you can even keep your air conditioning. :) You need prelude engine mounts, though... the D or B series mounts aren't strong enough. If I had my engine of choice (oh wait... I do!), I would go with a b16 block bored out to 1.8 and sleeved (Got bored a few days ago). A stock b16 runs a 15.5-16.0 on a good run. With an intake and exhaust done like I have, along with the bore out, I look to be running a 15.5 regularly, faster on good runs. I like the B series blocks because they fit so SO nicely. If you want more power than a B18, try going for a B20 block and bore it out to 2.2, then add a VTEC head on it. The b20 has MASSIVE amounts of torque, and breaks 100 without even thinking about it. And the VTEC head gives you some more horsepower and quickness. About the Spoon parts, yes they are very good parts, but I don't know if they're any better than any of the other parts in that quality range. I mean come on... an intake is an intake. You can make your own for $60, or you can buy an AEM for $200... both do the same thing, both make the same gains.. Just remember that you get what you pay for. You also have to think about if you want to do N/A or forced induction... turbos are fun... a LOT of fun. Boost is a wonderful thing. When my current engine dies, I'm gonna get a bored out B20 with the VTEC head and turbo it... see what it can do. I personally don't like the H22 just because it is REALLY big... you have less than 1 inch of clearance as you lower it in, which with someone as accident prone as me is saying "I'll take 1 crunched fender, 1 busted headlight, and a snapped off starter please!" I like the B series blocks.. the sol holds them nicely, and done right, a b block can have just as much, if not more, power than an H. Good luck on your decision. :D

I'd probably go with the b series engine. the h22a would weigh down your del sol and you probably need new suspension.. anyone correct me if i'm wrong

a lot of people who have done this swap into their civics actually enjoy it. many of the poeple had no complaints as far as weght and handling. they said it was like having your 10 year old brother in the passenger seat. as far as handling, if you are going to be going heavy into this swap, you might as well get suspension that will support the weight. i mean people custom springrates all the time. i.e... 600front/675rear for road race. my friend used 800 all around on his rex. handled like it had no shocks at all. it was a very hard ride but boy did he fly through any corner you gave him. eibach custom rates gets praise by me

Well, I was going to redo the suspension anyway. Though my Sol handles great with just the APC strut bar, I was going to do some Eibach's sportline lowering springs. Along with that, I realize I need new struts, shocks, and probably a chamber kit. To top it off, I'll be going with some anti-sway bars. I won't stop until I can pull 2 or 3 Gs going into a corner. :naughty: Perhaps it's not realistic...but it's a goal. At anyrate, the more I think about it and the more advice I get on it, the more I lean towards a B18c5. I probably won't get as much horse out of it as I would an H22, but went you consider the power-to-weight ratios, I should get just about the same performance...right?

hey man well the h22 will add a bunch od unneede wighet to your car but it will give u power and speed. but my buddy just put a B16A1 in his del sol and it is quick with that engine and it is lighter than the h22 and prolly for the price of the h22 u could get the B16 and put a turbo on it and that would be so quick b/c the del sol it so light. that would give u cleos to like 350 hp in that lil car so stick with teh B16,

Sorry Darketernal but you need to get different mounts if you want that h22 to fit in your car

yeah you have to get prelude mounts. The H is great for drag racing, because it is a LOT of power. Like I said before, I like B series better. Or if you wanna be REALLY cool, smack an F20 in there. buahahaha.

but if you do get the h22 swap
get the jdm h22 type-s w/lsd, 220 horses of pure pleasure :naughty:
i've been in a lot of h22 civic (hatches too) and they don't ride as bad as people say. The handling isn't as bad as people say either...just don't trip too much about it, as long as you get your suspension work done.

F20C1 = S2000 motor. 2.0L with 240 horses stock. RWD. 6 speed. Makes me need new underwear just THINKING about a sol with that in it. One day I will have it... but not for a long time.

2 or 3 G's huh. right
that would give u cleos to like 350 hp
lol that is alittle unrealistic isn't it? I would think it would be more like 230-250 with stock internals and hondata.

Does the B20/B16 or B18 combo fit into the Sol, or do you need to buy new mounts for these also?

I would think all you need is the mounts from a B16 del sol to make any B series motor fit.

^^ tis true. B series mounts hold the b16, b18, and b20.

Actually, any B series fits into a Sol...not that you shouldn't get new mounts anyway, 'cuz you should! Some people like to break a few mounts before they learn though.

I put aside what everyone said about the h22 swap and decided to do it because i know alot of what was said was wrong. Well all i can tell you is that it is CRAZY fast stock. jdm h22a not type s. Door to door in 8th mile with a 394 hp v8 bmw m-5 supercharged. And i didnt have the butterflys hooked up in the throttlebody either to give me more power and torque in VTEC. I have tokico illuminas all the way around with skunk2 coilovers and Enjo swap mounts.
Yes the handling is comprimised a bit but if i had a strut bar i know it would help alot. I only have a rear lower bar.

Door to door with an M5?! :bananasmi
I've been thinking about a H22a vs a B18c5 for a long time now. I'm doing the build and swap myself with some mechanic friends of mine. This'll be my first swap, and my first true build. I've tuned my D16 a bit, but I haven't built it. All that in mind, I'm probably going to do an ITR motor. Besides, doing a little research on the process of puttin those motors in a civic has taught me that an H22 is a big pain in the ass. :p Not sure I want to try to do that!

Keep the sohc, im running mid 13's with mine and im still naturally aspirated with like $1500 worth of mods, ill be in mid to low 12's by the time im done and a sohc running 12's will get you way more respect on the street than a dohc running 11's. with h22 prepare to replace axles and transmissions constantly, i have a friend with one in a sol that runs 12.20 and he has a used tranny in it about every 3 months.

To start off with. The H22 conversion in a del sol could not kkep it near a BMW M5 with or without a supercharger. The V8 in the M5 pushes 394hp stock, with a supercharger it would be over 500hp to the wheels. The M5 launches to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and quarters in 13.3@108mph. And thats stock. With a supercharger you would be no where near it. But yes a Del Sol with an H22 is fast.
Second, ther is a Del Sol RWD conversion out there. I have seen it my self. Its also rear mounted engine. So its doabale. But not worht the money, just buy an S2000. And as for putting anything biger than the B16 in the car. Well IT WILL mess up handling. Even with proper suspension. In the wet the front end will pluw through corners more. Also the weight transfer during high speed corners is bad too. Stick with what the car comes with. Bore out the B16 to a B18. You gan get a big bore kit from TODA Racing and bore it out. It actualy lessens the weight of the motor. Which will help the car with weight distribution.
O and Civics can handle an H22 because the engine sits farther back in the engine bay then in a Del Sol. So the Civics handling would not be effected as much as a Del Sol's would. But if you go biger engine expect it to handle less:)

I was curious is the h22a the biggest motor that can fit the sol i am guessing that it is but would the b16a be a better choice or would the crv motor i think it's a b20 (not sure though)?

As someone who has a stock B16A3 in my Del Sol, I will have to say that although I am very pleased with it's performance and output, I wish it had more torque to back up its potential. Don't get me wrong - 8200rpm redline is great and spin RPM's it does - very well in fact. But the gears are pretty short and it could use more torque. My roommate's '95 Integra LS comes with a B18B DOHC non-VTEC motor. I have 20hp on him and weigh less. He still gets me every time - he's got about 16lbs more torque than my motor and taller gears. Only other thing he's got over my mods is a header and exhaust - otherwise we're pretty much evenly matched in mods for the most part.
If I had the money, I would still keep a B-series in the Del Sol, however I would opt for a B18 flavor or a B20. Both of which offer more torque and I have a B16 head to do a hybrid. Or even a CTR B16B motor would be a thought. Putting a B-series into the Del Sol is very easy to do, the parts are readily available and no custom work really needs to be done.
The B-series motors are all the same dimensions and weight (or not really much difference in weight anyway) so the handling and installation would not be compromised. And you still have the option of building it or doing F/I.

The H22 doesn't really fit well into anything other than a prelude. obviously you can make it fit, but it' a big pain in the ass, it'll weigh the car down, handling will suffer, and the custom work needed to make it fit in a Sol gets very pricey. Best bet, stick to a B series.
