Automatic to Manual...

I have a 97' TA, right now it is an auto. but honestly I would rather have a 6 speed. Has anyone here done this or know of a website that may have some instructions. I know I would need the tranny, pedal assembly, master and slave cylinder, the ECU from a 97 6 spd, clutch and flywheel, all the lines, the 6 speed center console, shifter. Any help on actually doing the swap or if it is even possible would be great thanks.

I know it's possible. I've never done it or know of anyone that has done it, but I know it's possible. It'll just take some labor and time...

Hey,
that 3 pedal makes a muscle /sports car is bull.. total bull and i used to think that way..
throw in a stall converter(Torque converter).. 3200 Stall, gears, transgo shiftkit and if alot of racing is done do the valve body
.. already Auto's accountfor 70% of all 1/4 mile wins.. and with the stall on a roll.. you'll be smiling.. i don't know but when win i not bored
that 70 % account is without the opotional equipment.. remeber if a human thinks he can shift faster than a computer..lol'' that will be the day
the 4l60e is a great auto
also you don't need as high of gears since the auto's planetarty ratios are very good...
and rember this.. this is the M6 killer you'll drop .7-.75 without adding 1 hp to the engine.. see if a M6 can do that
don't waste your money and effort.. get a Midwest TC,, a trango shitfkit.. and buy a used 3.42 from all the 6 speeds that NEED 4:10s.
trust e i walked a 03 cobra.. with minor bolt ons and the afformentioned tranny mods.. by 6 cars to 120

I ran 13.12 stock before the stall..399 transgo 104 dollars
some and nitto relacements.. wich is maintenance 160 each.. your bilstien oes help you 1/4 time..it a track suspension.. so i doubt youcould run 10 13.1x's .. sorry pall.. your wrong.. test have shown 70% of the Auto's win becauseof consistency

Second, why do I doubt all of this? Because you can't write simple english. Credit is earned by one being able to decipher another's post, which you make almost impossible from the start.
As for your 10's, nobody is gonna believe that until you do the norm, post your slips, pics, etc. Internet racing is for teens. As for the airflow in the hoodscoops, that is bs until you're over 100 anyway. It has no effect on the car except for looks until then.

In fact, you'd be the first that I know of to say otherwise.

Just buy another with a 6-speed - and I'm not being smart. I plan to own an LS1 some day (realistically within the next 5 years) and it will be an M6. By then my LT1-auto Z28 should be on its way to being a full-blown drag monster, and I'll be cruisin "heads up" in the C5. Its all a matter of how bad you want it/how much you into it.
Personally I think you've got the best looking T/A styling ever made. I'd keep her if I were you - as is or modified if must be. I've only had my car for two summers and I could never sell her - ever.
As far as the 4L60E goes, the hourglass is ticking the minute you start adding horsepower. The only reason I haven't built a stroker motor already is because I cannot afford a rebuilt 700R4 tranny to go along with it (or a 12-bolt Moser for that matter).

intake and exhaust your times suck.. you must be a real slick 6 speed driver.. whatsup.. to much spin..
a Vigilante or yank.. overpriced.. every so often Ls1.com hasa Group purcase .. this ishow i got mine for less.. and since it was damaged in transit.. they made it cousto for me.. and sent it overnight on a Saturday morning i recieved it.. Midwest is the best TC company around.. i'd hedge a bet that Vig and Yank get their TC's from them

I would tend to agree with sonic about manual vs auto. A stock auto is a slush box that is toned down to provide comfortable ride for the average driver. Things like shift speed and firmness is not what it can be. There is no way a human could shift as fast as a modified tranny. A stall converter matched to the output curve of your engine will outperform stock any day. I think autos get a bad rap since many people never try to juice up the slush box.

I've converted 2 firebirds to 4 speeds, 69 and 79. Newer cars are more of a pain. :)

I never claimed to be a blistering manual driver, hell that quarter time is a year and half old. At least I've got the slips to prove my times, and am not an internet racer. And since you pointed it out, when I got that time, I was racing TNT (Test N' Tune) at the same time they were bracket racing. They wouldn't let me start in the groove, as proven by the 60' time. Pretty easy to tell I was spinning just by that time, so I congradulate you. There wasn't any addition involved with that, so you did well.
I own my car for the sheer fun of it, and detest being associated with people the likes of you. Quit giving F-body owners a bad wrap, and learn the correct facts before you give them.

Edit: As for my cars, yes, this is my only car. I've worked my ass of for it, including schooling, of which I graduate with my B.S. in Architectural Engineering a week from tomorrow. There will be a 94-96 SS in the garage next to my 01 SS in the near future, so yes my Camaro is my daily driver.
I'll be out of town until Sunday evening (actually at a club Christmas Party for a local F-body club, being social), so feel free to post more things that I won't really read, and I'll argue with you then...

I never claimed to be a blistering manual driver, hell that quarter time is a year and half old. At least I've got the slips to prove my times, and am not an internet racer. And since you pointed it out, when I got that time, I was racing TNT (Test N' Tune) at the same time they were bracket racing. They wouldn't let me start in the groove, as proven by the 60' time. Pretty easy to tell I was spinning just by that time, so I congradulate you. There wasn't any addition involved with that, so you did well.
I own my car for the sheer fun of it, and detest being associated with people the likes of you. Quit giving F-body owners a bad wrap, and learn the correct facts before you give them.

Edit: As for my cars, yes, this is my only car. I've worked my ass of for it, including schooling, of which I graduate with my B.S. in Architectural Engineering a week from tomorrow. There will be a 94-96 SS in the garage next to my 01 SS in the near future, so yes my Camaro is my daily driver.

I know already I am leaving it as an auto. Oh, and my friend has an 01 T/A auto. and bone stock with a k&n filter he ran a 13.49 at the track and he has a slip to prove that... the Hood.. in this forum has been discussed.. and at best the SS is a cool air intake were the Ws6 hood design allows for cols air / ram air.. how you can say a hood doesn't supply hp.. yes on a dyno with the car not moving.. we are talking realworld.. their s heat soak and the SS hood require the air ( oxygen to pass) through multiple citcutous paths then sent forward to align with the air lid..
so in fact a Hood does not provide hp is correct on a dyno.. i know of no races on a dyno

Tell me genious where is the weak link in a stock Fbody .. the rear diff.. an Auto maintaines static tension on the gears.. this make it less likely to break then droppy the clutch (non static 0 on the rear gears.. whatkills the 4l60e is heat.. and for 30 Bucks maaybe 40 .. you can easily remedy this 2 things one lucus tranny stabilizer, and a tranny cooler, doesn't haveto be a 24,000Gvw B&M i put in a 18,000GVR

Just to let everyone know I think that everything that Sonic has stated so far is 100% correct. I have heard most of this already from another good friend of mine that owns a 99 Formula and works at the Pontiac dealership localy. I hate to be wrong as much as the next person but this is a battle I dont think you are going to win... I think the bottom line here is that yes you can probably have more fun with a 6 speed, no doubt that. But, fact of the matter is that when you pull up to the line and the guy next to is got an auto. guess who has the better odds...

First, there is a very good reason for me to suggest moving away from the 4L60E. It is practical expirence with this unit. I have seen many of them fried, in stock applications. I would like to know where I stated anything about the rearend? Yes, it is a weak point. However, I do not recall this thread to be pertaining to the rearend. The 4L60E has a fatal problem that heat has nothing to do with. The reaction shell is rather frail I have seen qutie a few trannys destroyed because of this part failing. Second, I have never seen any controlled tests done on these two vehicles that test either the MAP, or the intake air temp at speed. If you have some numbers post them here. If you have only theory than fine, let it be. Third, if you could make some attempt not to be so rude it would much aid your case. You made guesses on what I was refering to, and then you mock me. Again, what I have stated is not theory, but practical application.

Just to let you guys know. I already knew the tranny and the rear-end both are potential weak points in the car, and quite frankly they are. I am planning on getting a performance rebuild on the tranny so it can withstand more HP/Torque, as for the rear-end, I will prolly go with a Strange 12 bolt, I have heard good things about these units and Strange makes a direct swap for the LT1/LS1. Thanks for everyones help on this... Though I dont know how much I actually got...lol

In my experience the Vlave body is only need to be replaced, and if you have " practical experience with 4l60E i'll refer you to art carr.. whom i spoke with . He said as long as the temp is in check , poprprober fluid level and type a tranny cooler and a non over abundance of hp the tranny will last .. when you speak about the 4l60 e you put up the whole drive line for scrutinization.. the rare will break on a 6M first as willl the clutch..
Valve body, shift kit, lUcas stabilizer ( for tempps) tranny cooler.. and i'll glady take the test against the 6M.
Sorry on the hood desig you have to have controled weather conditions.. to give out precise numbers.. its clear that the SS hood does not provide the quantity or density( heatsoak) that the Ws6 hood does.. this is basic logic employing physic knowledge
Does the hood make Hp ..No it repac air into the manifold.. as underload the manifold pressure drops.. and under load means 2, 3,4 gear..
I'll state this. No disripect for the very good looking SS.. but i've yet to see a same day test between the 2 that th Ws6 didn't edge out the SS.. now most observers of this test say it accurs right around 60 mph when the Ws6 starts to "make its move..
this would consistant.. with Formulas derived from the Variram Corvette system which state.. retutrning the Ve starts at 48- 52-53... and the Ws6 is not as good as th specific variram.. even with the removal of the rain bafffles and sealing it to the air box.. but its close..
from personal experience without changing anything else i gained .25 consistant.. i think thats a practical example.
Srry i don't beleive the Auto tranny has any more problems tha the 6m driveline, weere cluthes and sycro's and rearends drop much quckly than a fried 4l60e
and temp is its major enemy 90% of all failures are heat related

Bottom line if you take care of your tranny.. it will last .. period..
And the Auto holds a healthy advantage over the 6m even stock in 1/4 mile racing

Excelent..J.. a rebuild won't cost too much especially if the trasnny isin good working condition now.. But that Strange is gonna set you back.. i assume you'll want to retain you abs.. good chioce..for sure..
.. shop around for the rebuild.. ive seen great shops do it for a fair price.. not more than a heavy duty clutch and install on a 6M

It's all good. Anyway I've seen a lot of STOCK 4L60Es destroyed heat was the death of most, but several had broken reaction shells, and some of these trannys were coming from cars with much less power than an LS1. I suppose it's just some thing to be aware of.

I know that the Torque limits of 4l60e are approached rather quickly.. though keeing it cool seems to have done me right.. i ran it hard yesterday.. and as always i check allmy essentials.. i checked tranny level. and its smell.. no burnt smell.. wich is what i expect but more importantly.. it was cool.. or rather warm.. as apposed to the short time i drove it without a tranny cooler.. you couldn't touch the fluid it was hot if not hotter than oil.. now the i'm glad as hell i spent that 49.99 with a stall its necessary even though i run a low rpm (relative) stall.
i'm curios were these vehicles 4L.. work or load related ?
hey eveything man makes wears out eventually.. but if some slub is towing his boat..then yah i see it.. or always has a full load inside, approaching the vehicles load limit again i agree.. most people also don't drive to cool down.. i picked up that habit.. probably the worst thing you can do is go show offf( read race, burnouts beating on it) and then pull it in and park it.. just lie their is a warm up period there is a cooldown period.. i guess manufacturer don't want people to do that.. NO money if it Aint Broke

All lot of them were coming out of S-10s with the 4.3L, so both horsepower and torque. All though I saw a few out of F-bodys as well. However, In colorado s-10s far out number F-bodys. Most came from personal vehilces, and within the warranty (3years/36,000mi) I'd think that extra heat wouldn't have helped any, but I don't think it was heat alone. Your right that every thing wears out but a tranny that isn't beat on should last a long than that. I mean you can make it work, but it's barely enough for the LS-1. So if you're planning on adding power and willing to replace the tranny why not put some thing with some that should take the power you want?
I personally would rather blow out my rear end than lose the tranny.

wELL IF YOU CATCH IT BEFORE ITS TOTALLY BLOW.. I CALLED AROUND A PERFORMANCE REBUILD IS WITHIN 350 TO 450. INCLUDING HARD PART.. SO .. HIGH PRICED CLUTCH OR TRANY REBUILD.. I THINK ITS PRETTY CLOSE.. .. ONE SHOP SAID WITH THEIR TRANNY REBUILD.. AND I GAVAE A SPECIFIED 420 HP AND EQUAL TORQUE THEY SAD .. WTH THE EQUIPMENT I ALREADY HAD A 350 TRANNY REBUILD.. AND THEIR IS NO RESON.. IT SHOULDNT LAST 80-100K MILES.. WITH 20 % HARD DRIVE( IE READ WOT ).. WHICH IS ABOUT RIGHT..

I did some realpricing on real heavy performance rebuilds.. they run about 1200.. reybestos bands, corvette 1a nd 2 servo-- thopugh the f-might have them .NO?
but they all iclude various parts i already have installed and their is no discount..
though i ran into a very honest performance guy.. he asked whati had dne.. askd wat my driving habits were.. and he told me.. that if you get on it only Once in awhile with Nos.. yu should fine.. the transgo and the tranny cooler go a long way..
he was also the least expensive with the best parts available..
