My SES light came on the other day and I have a code reader and hooked it up. I got a P0430 code which the book said is Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold(Bank 2). Is this most likely a bad O2 sensor or catalytic converter. If its a sensor, are they easily replacable and how much do they typically cost? Thanks in advance!!!!

Basically what has happened is the catalyst in the converter can no longer do its job.
The diagnosis for this is fairly simple....DTC P0430...replace converter.
Here is some good news...If you vehicle is less than 8 years old and less than 80000 miles, this repair is covered under you GM emissions warranty and the converter will be replaced at no charge to you.

this was also done on my 2000 Z71 when the transmission was repaired...
no cost at all to me ... and since all the bolts were hosed and corroded, i got pretty much a completely new exhaust system except for the muffler (which was fine anyway)
doug

I've got the P0785 DTC code on the Tahoe, is this just a small part that needs to be replaced? my service engine light comes on, then goes off for a few hours then comes back on.

We had the same code also...so after replacing all 8 injectors, fuel control module, full tune up and the left O2 sensor...the code came back on...wife took it to the local Firestone dealer...they replaced 2 more injectors...code came back on...they told her that it has to be the converters and about the 8/80 warrantee...took it to the Chevy dealer and they replaced both for free...we spent $1100, before the fact...AutoZone was tired of seeing me every day, getting the codes read...offered me a job...hahaha

Thats why I stress that people do a little diagnosis before throwing money away...I wish I had 1100 bucks to throw away on something that didn't fix my problem :disappoin

I hear that!!!! I just thank God that when I got my code that there was a site like this to come to and people like Merlin to help me out. When I walked into my Chevy dealer I was already one step ahead because I knew what was wrong, knew what should be replaced, and knew it should be at no cost to me. My local Chevy dealer is pretty good and it all probably wouldve been ok anyway, but still its good to have some peace of mind when I went in there. They actually charged me like $40 bucks for a gasket or something like that and I really didnt care about it at the time, I had just gotten two new cats and all new exhaust from the exhaust manifolds back to the muffler( a magnaflow, sounds awesome!!!) Just being the way I am, I was like whats $40? Well, I got a call like 2 weeks later from the dealer saying they shouldnt have charged me that and they gave me a refund. I thought that was awesome.

i sort of gave up on that stuff. after i spent the $160 for the code reader (also at Autozone) i lost interest in it. i took it to my mechanic (friend for life) and we reset the codes and the thing ran like new. once i reset the codes the truck ran fine. the symptoms prior were that the transmission would seem to skip, the truck would kind of heave and jump a little once it got into gear. very disturbing and even more embarrassing if you have a passenger. i've since leaped Into the ultra Lux LS 430 so the Tahoe got pushed aside 4 days a week. it seems to be running fine though.

When we spent ALL that money, we were taking advice from the AZ people...we didn't know anyone else that had a Tahoe...now that I have found this site, I see alot of other people with the same problems...so far our truck is running good!
