I am getting a little tired of this car--every time you turn around, it's there! :disappoin

It's hideous to look at. It's been abused by all and sundry. It's been for sale forever with no takers. Why does the owner keep prostituting it like this? Especially when it seems like he doesn't even know how to drive it well himself? He just took delivery of an Enzo, so surely he can't be doing it for the money?? :2cents:

Take it home, treat it well, and instead of showing it off, drive it! :loser:

looking like a tacky jappy pimp-mobile as usual, with its normal colour coded brother hummer next to it. Plus the million tonne extras included, 1.3 is a bit too much in my oppinion.

Not sure if I'm barking up the wrong tree... Drew Phillips is not me. Is there another Drew on this forum?

Yeah - he was just referring to the guy who took the pics. Drew Phillips is the site owner and has recently been gracing the WWW with quite a few really amazing photos of various cars. When he posted these at SC.net, and probably a few other places, he mentioned it was the first McLaren F1 he had seen.

chernobyl - "Kennedy" is Dan Kennedy - do a search for his name on this forum and you should be able to find out all about him.

I don't know what your talking about. Other than the "hideous" wheels
it's perhaps the best looking Mclaren f1 out there IMO, the color is just
exquisite. But I do agree that he should drive it, although there's
nothing wrong with him sharing it with the rest of us folks at car shows.

I've always had love for this car. The wheels look excellent on there, and they're close to but not exactly like the S7 wheels. I saw Dan on "The Screen Savers" the other day.

By the way, the H2 behind it is not on 28's. Your friend has to be talking about another one.

Ugh, I absolutely cannot stand Kennedy's Mclaren, he's tried to improve upon perfection. I don't understand what it is with people and 'rims' it seems that no stock rim these days is good enough. 95% of the peopel that put aftermarket rims on make that the focus of the car, and what an awful focus it is.

All ranting aside, how could you vanadalize a Mclaren like that? Those rims suit the car perfectly, the LM ones are almost to good looking on LM's and GTR's. I just don't understand why somebody would dump boatload's of money to undo a masterpiece.

tvrfreak
11-07-2003, 01:17 AM
Not only are the original wheels good looking, but they are made of a magnesium alloy that was exotic at the time...I don't know if it's more mainstream now, but these replacement rims are definitely a step backwards, technologically, functionally (more prone to bending), and aesthetically.

I was at SEMA today and saw it in person. The rubberized lower part of the door is still scraped up--at least on one side. The interior looks pretty clean, but I saw a couple of things that I would fix up. The exterior was detailed to perfection--the car was simply gleaming.

Also talked to the P21S folks--the guys who make the wax and whose ads feature a silver McLaren. It's Herb Chambers' car.

I assure you that the wheels on Dan Kennedy's car are there only for the promotion of the Nitto Tire booth that it was located in. You will note on every one of the pictures that are posted of Dan's car with the exception of last year's SEMA Show, that have been found here on AF have the original wheels. The car has not driven more than 1 or 2 miles with those tires and wheels. Those wheels are not the proper offset to be functional on the car at all. The wheels stick too far outside the fenderwells and would make contact with the fenders upon striking a bump or swell in the freeway.

Those wheels are not to Dan's liking and are certainly not for his interest. I do agree with you, Dan has no intention of improving (negatively) upon the looks of the original wheels on the car.

TVRFreak, I did notice the scrapes in the rubberized coating on the bottom of the left door. I also inspected it closely to find that the scrapes did not impact the paint or the carbon fiber. I also noticed one small frey on the left seat leather. The spot was not unsightly, or from excessive abuse. It could be easily removed. Good eye. :)

I am the much referenced, and occasionally criticized, Dan Kennedy, the crazy McLaren/H2/Enzo/et. car nut you all seem to know so much about :) I finally had to speak out to all of the folks out there in regards to my F1. Here are a few things you should know...

1. The car is ORANGE. I like orange. It looks GREAT in person and I wouldn't have it another way. If you don't like orange, this isn't the car for you and I apologize for all of the unbearable pain I have caused you. But for me, it doesn't get any better.

2. I drive the car A LOT. The car has over 20,000 miles and counting. I dive ALL of my cars. I have put over 100,000 miles on my Ferrari's in less then 5 years. I can guarantee you that not many other McLaren’s have seen as much seat time as mine.

3. The car has been meticulously maintained. I have had this car maintained to the highest standards and it has always been worked on by McLaren at McLaren (or Oxnard). This isn't cheap, but it insures that the car is top shape. (I personally wouldn't want to be in something going 210 mph that’s maintained by Frank at the corner station.)

4. I do know how to drive. I have been racing for years in the Ferrari Challenge Series as well as an upcoming 360 in GrandAm. I’m not the fastest guy on the track every race, but can hold my own. More importantly, my cars are driven like they were designed to be driven.

5. The car is NOT for sale. A website was put up over a year and a half ago and I FIANALLY got them to pull it. I stopped reading the emails a year ago and had MANY offers before I did that any sane man would have taken. (Clearly you can't be TOO sane when you own an Orange McLaren)

6. I show the car because I like to share my cars with passionate people like yourselves who haven't had the opportunity to own such a spectacular car... yet:)

7. The car has TONS of high tech options on it. Navigation, 160gb MP3, Radar, Intercom, 2 way radio, new A/C, Radiators, Xenon, et... These were engineered and installed by McLaren at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The car is not HACKED together by some 18 year old studying to get his GED.

8. The infamous rims. Hopefully I don’t have to explain my position here because anyone with a passion for serious cars should KNOW my position without me having to say it. (They have only been on the car twice at SEMA because I was doing a favor for a friend. Not the rims I drive on, believe me!)

Hope this info straightens out some of the rumors. I'm just a guy that LOVES cars just as you all obviously do. Sharing this car is one way to share a bit of my passion for the world’s greatest car. You guys rock!

Well let me be the first to say "Welcome aboard Dan!"

Gee, its getting kind of crowded in here with all these actual McLaren F1 owners now. :D

I'm not sure who has criticized the color of your car - I think it's great. It wouldn't be my first choice, but it does look great on the car. My only complaint about the color is that for about a year, it had me convinced that you owned the last F1 built - #075. I told a lot of people that when they would post photos of your car, so if a bunch of people have asked you if your's was the last one, you can blame me. ;)

As for the gizmos - it's your car, you spent the money and you can certainly do whatever you like to it. I think it betrays a little of what Gordon Murray's thoughts were when building the car - a minimum of weight, no driver aids, and as I'm sure you are aware no radio. That's my only gripe. I doubt the addition of those things really slows the car any noticeable amount, it's just the principle of it.

I do want to commend you for driving the car as much as you do. It seems you are one of just a handful of owners that gets their full Show&Display allotted 2500 miles out of the car. That's awesome!! I've also heard many stories about your openess to share the car and that is also refreshing to hear. So many exotic owners couldn't be bothered answering the questions of a few enthusiasts or letting them get a closer look at their car.

Thanks for jumping in here and setting a few things straight. Hopefully this won't be your only visit. Next time you plan to display the car somewhere, or plan to have the car in LA please drop in and let us know. I know I would love to have the opportunity for a closer look.

Just a side note, Gordon actually LOVES my car. I had the chance to spend some time with him in Woking when I took delivery and loved the color as well as the options. He's a huge classic rock fan and had Kenwood design the lightest CD player in the world for the car. It even has a sub. It actually sounds killer. He didn't want a radio, but made sure you still had great sounding tunes.

 Ok, wait a sec, there are now 2 f1 owners on this forum with a total of 4 McLarens  s. I am living in a dream.
Welcome Dan Kennedy and I actually commend you on doing things with your 038. Other owners don't touch their cars but I think yours is a rarity with all those extra options. But how on earth did you get to fit everything in? was it compensation, eg under the left passenger seat, the sat nav. Did that interfere with side compartment space?
A few questions to get started.

-Who introduced you to this forum?
-Are you good friends with pulp racing?, I saw a picture of heaven with a 355, 360 modena and an F1 in the middle.
-Do you know of any F1s in Australia. It doesn't look like i'll be seeing one for a while because of my remote continent. I know (through many connections) that Dean Wills and Linsay Fox own(ed) an F1.
-How many times have you contacted Woking via modem? Very very cool.
-Ever considered a high downforce kit?
-Attended any McLaren meetings or presentations?
-Seen a GT? (leaves me speechless)
-Raced any hopefull teens? or even people with a stock civic and a clip-on exhaust/ and the like?
-038 is regarded as the most photographed F1, how do you feel about that?
-What other interior and exterior colours have you considered?
-How does it feel do have complete stangers know all about your life? You must feel like a major celebrity, but here of course you are

THANKYOU for participating, please become a regular.
PS:Mr Selldorf, please reply aswell to any new questions I have. Both owners presence is greatly appreciated/ and needed! I/we would like to hear both sides and perspectives of areas and related topics on owning and racing your f1s.

A couple of quick questions:
What is your opinion of the competence and customer service levels at the Oxnard facility in comparison to McLaren HQ at Woking?

Have you had your clutch replaced yet?

Has any other major component given you any problems?

Please share any and all of your experiences with the car. We absolutely love to hear about them. Many thanks, and welcome again!

Oh and on a side note, I hear you own an IT business :D any room for a web designer all the way from Australia looking for work! I moved to the US 18 months ago from Sydney, having trouble scoring a job :(

F1 forum, sorry if this really is the owners, but I am a little sceptical about some "owners". This is only because the people on this forum could create an account and post replys to simple questions asked by other users and reply with the knowledge gained from other threads. I do think one or two owners are definately credible. Also whenever we bring up a certain chassis, the owner comes on board. It just seems a little too perfect for me, but then again, it could be true :)

Mike-
I can tell you that I was slightly skeptical on "CyberDan" myself, but I can assure you that this is most definitely him who has posted here. The email address used to register for this site is not one that could be easily obtained. The domain attached to it is one of Mr. Kennedy's companies which leaves very little doubt in my mind that they could have come from anyone else.

As for the other two - there's no doubt at all about "fselldorff" as several people have given credibility to his identity, and several of his answers could not have been pulled from other posts. As for "cbeal", the latest addition to our contributing owners list, I do believe that the poster "will69camaro" directed him to this forum just like he said he would.

Now if the Sultan of Brunei really did show up and start posting here, that I would have to question.
