hey im new here. when i shift from 4lo to 4hi i seem to get quite a bit of gear grinding. i have heard this is normal but i would like to hear something from a fellow xterra driver. i checked the manual but no expected grinding was stated. thanks for any help

Are you "pausing" in "N" for any period? You really should be shifting from 4L straight to 4H in one quick motion, otherwise the gears have time to get out of synch and will grind. It's best to shut the engine down and put it in the desired position if it grinds persistently. A moment of grinding if you get it on the first try isn't really a problem though.

Brent is correct. 4 Lo is an unsynchronized gear and will grind if not initiated correctly. It is best to put the truck in neutral and let it set for a second or two prior to making the change to or from 2 Lo. That allows the engine to spin down before making the switch to or from.
