Need Help - SERIOUSLY

I just purchased a 95 SR6 4WD 4Runner. I have never owned a 4WD vehicle before and the drivers manual may as well be written in another language...

1.) What is the ECT button for? When do I use it?
2.) What is the O/D button for? When do I use it?

Are there any other newsgroups/message boards that may be of assistance to dummies like me?

Help!

thanks!

O/D id for Overdrive. it is a fourth gear basicly. Use it on the highway.

Not sure what ECT stands for, maybe something like Electronic Control Transmission or something like that. none the less I am willing to bet my life that the explaination is in the manual. I know the manual may be annoying to read but that's what they are for

I agree..

Don't have those buttons but I beleive the ECT button is for holding the transmission in a more powerful mode.
Kinda the reverse of the over drive.

what you have got on your model i think is the equivelent of sports mode, holds the gears longer.that is if it is an auto.try out and see,put your foot down and feel!!(e.c.t.)

Lets make this easy to understand - the ECT is basically a "sports power" button. It will cut into your gas mileage a little, but it does add noticeable power.

The O/D is overdrive. Chances are you are gonna want to leave this on. It gives you that much-desired 5th gear. The only time you would ever want to shut that off is if you are towing something heavy or going up some heavy hills.

Hope that helps!

Thanks alot! I've been driving with the O/D off, just because the dashboard light comes on (to let you know you're in OD). I always thought the fewer "idiot-lights" on, the better! I think Toyota shoulda engineered the vehicle so that it lets you know that it's off, if you're "supposed" to drive with the OD on....does that make sense?

They changed the O/D light on newer 4Runners. Now the light comes on if you turn the O/D off.

the ECT makes the trany shift at a higher rpm and is usually a smooth shift. youll prob wanna leave the OD on its better on gas, unless your burrying one of those civics.

I inadvertently left the ECT on all the time...now it doesn't come on. Any suggestions?

Hi All - I'm new here, but I work on my own rig (hobby) so I hope I can contribute.

I own a 1992 3vz 4wd SR5 automatic.

Both of these buttons affect when your tranny shifts. The ECT button will cause your engine to rev higher before shifting into the next higher gear. Us eit when you want to race the Porsche next to you. A word of advice, don't race for pink slips, since "sliggish" comes standard on all 4wd auto 3vz's.

The OD (OverDrive) off button stops your transmission from shifting into it's highest gear. So when you're on the freeway, your engine revs higher.

Both of these buttons will negatively affect your gas mileage.

Finally, my 1992 dash lights only come on when the ECT is "ON" or the OD is "OFF" I am surprised to hear that a 1995 is wired differently.

Hope this helps.

David
