I had my first foray into personal automotive repair last night and changed the oil on my 1990 cherokee 4.0L 6 cyl. I had wanted to flush the coolant too, but I can not figure out where the hell the drain bolt is. All I have to go by is the vague diagram in the owner's manual. Any pointers?

Passenger side of the radiator about 6" up from the bottom. I could see no way to use it without making a huge mess. no way I can see to run a hose to it or put a pan under. so I siphoned from the bottle until it got low enough I could remove the top radiator hose and siphon the rest from there. the cooling sytem on this thing is the biggest pain in the a$$ I've ever dealt with. just look down this page, I bet 30% of questions have to do with cooling or overheat, major design flaws. I'm planning to replace mine with a regular cooling system ASAP.

Cap'n A is right, it's on the passenger side and points out towards the side of the car. If it's like mine, the problem is that it is not visible without first pushing aside a kind of dust cover/flap that covers that side area. If you look straight up from the bottom, you will see a sort of rubber/fiber material panel that you can push up on and fold it back over towards the outside. Don't need to remove it, just fold it back. I was able to push a hose over the outlet and then unscrew the plug, leaving it in or course, and it did not make a mess. Good luck!

You could probably gain better access to the drain plug by removing the grill and/or passenger side turn/park lamp assembly.
However, I always drain the cooling system by taking the lower radiator hose off the water pump. I always refill the system through the upper radiator hose (which saves alot of time rather than refilling through the coolant reservoir). :D

remove grill and use 5/8 wrench and drain it, use water to clean the mess. easy dude, remember to bleed your system cause if you dont your gonna overheat for sure.
