Funny thing about this race is that the Cobra has quite a few mods, while the Merc has only 2 (Tires and some other mod which I forget). Either way, both are sweet cars.

well the new amg's are freaking monsters. the CLK and E55 AMG can run a 12.4 stock!!! that is as fast as a Z06. and don't forget the new CL65AMG. its a 6.5 liter twin turbo V12 making over 500hp and that car can do 0-100mph in just 8.8 seconds!!

HOOOOLY FRIGGEN SH!T!!!! :eek7: That thing was GONE! I knew AMG's were fast but GEEZ how many stock cars (not exotic supercars) can walk away from modded cobras like that??
......still speechless......
EDIT: I saw it again and it was actually pretty close the second time....that was a good race. The Cobra couldnt hook up the first time I guess because it looks like he spun 'em pretty bad in second. So yea good race.

You may think to yourself, Why would a LS1 make it hook better? Pff cause it just does, that's how bad ass the LS1 is.

Got damn....that was fuc#ing awesome!!!!
I got a chance to start and rev the 2003 E55 AMG up....and the sound that engine makes......if I wasn't in public I probably would've busted a nut...LOL
But seriously....this was the first time i've seen the e55 in action...it is one of my fav cars. My father is planning to buy a E500 late next year...maybe the 2005 model in dec 2004...i'm trying to convince him to save up and get the e55.
The reason I didn't get to drive the E55 I revved was because it was stickered at $110,843 and it had under a 100miles on it at the MB dealer of Sacramento...and they wanted to keep it that way. If you don't believe me check it out....its only suggested by Manufacturer at $76,000 base but dealer markup is huge since they're limited production.

Hey, hey, hey, leave the LS1 out of this. I own an LS1 :) BTW whoever said that they hook well must own an automatic model w/ a torque converter, cause my car typically just spins. I can post a vid of me racing a heavily modified GTP. The run was done at a track that is at 2700 ft. elevation. I still ran a 13.1 sec. 1/4 mile at 111 mph (100 shot juice). Of course the 2.3 sec. 60' hurt me though :( I've hit 113 mph in the 1/4 mile at a track that was at 1600 ft. elevation.

Does it happen to be a silver merc vs a blue cobra? If so ive seen that. Just a bit to lazy and tired right now to click the link.Yeah 12.4 from a 4200 lb car... Thats sick... and all the luxury to boot. The vid I have seen, the amg wins both races, but the second race is much closer and imo the cobra won at the end. Wheres that spare change I keep dropping in the couch... Got to be 75k in there by now. . .

the CLK and E55 AMG can run a 12.4 stock!!! that is as fast as a Z06.
This makes me believe the Z06 cannot run those times. Either that or the E55 can run faster like 12.1. That Cobra has 450hp to the wheels and drag radials, and it still couldn't beat the E55 in both videos. I don't think a Z06 could beat a 450 hp Cobra, thats quite a difference in power.
That Cobra doesn't have that many mods IMO.
Like I said 450 hp quite a bit, where as the E55 is supposed to be around 460 and a couple hundred lbs heavier. E55 underrated? Yeah I'd say so.

actually the CLK doesn't run that fast (low 13), because it has the naturally aspirated V8 instead of the supercharged V8 in the E55.
The CL65 is actually a 6.0L, with over 600hp and 700lb-ft torque!

I haven't seen the vid in the link that NSX supplied, because my work computer does not allow it. But if we're talking about the original vid, the Cobra has IRS. And from memory, the Cobra has, intake, header, exhaust, chip, pulley, and DR's.

450hp out of a Cobra really doesn't require that much work. Rock stock I have seen more than one 03 on the dyno and both of them were in the mid to high 360rwhp range. Folks, at the 17 percent driveline loss we usually worked off of thats about 420-425hp at the crank. BTW this was in Knoxville TN FYI if that gives you a basic idea of altitude.
A pulley, exhaust (not headers), and a cold/ram air kit and those things make sick hp. Chevy guys feel free to freak here as LS6 Vettes never delivered the rwhp the 03 Cobra does. Yes, even the 405hp version.
But, those of us who have spent time at the track know that what gets through the tires is what counts, and in my experience the Cobra just doesn't hook up that good. And as most here know but to address a previous comment it's the chassis that hooks up not the motor
Many blame the Cobra's problems hooking up well on the IRS, but considering that the ZO6 and every new Mercedes use IRS that does not explain how they hook better if IRS sucks so bad. While I am no Vette enthusiast those things seem to hook up great from what I have seen.
I think it would be much more accurate to say the Cobra's IRS has problems hooking than to say IRS just sucks in general. I say this because I think what us Ford guys would consider a good launch in a Cobra would be mediocre by ZO6 standards. And, IMO I would rather have IRS in a Cobra even if it meant I would have those problems laying down the hp.
Hopefully, the 06 Cobra with it's completely new chassis will do better in this regard. Especially if the rumoured 500+hp shows up for the party.

I have a question for you, syr74.
I was always under the impression that a solid would better with a solid, no matter what the IRS being used. Do you think depending on the IRS it can plant just as good?
I ask this question because my curent project R32 GTR that I am planning on installing a stroker 351w with a T76, has a IRS. I was planning on tearing that out, but if it can hook just as good as a solid 9", I'll just keep the IRS.

explain how they hook better if IRS sucks so bad
Vettes have a much wider tire and I imagine that E55 does as well. Compared the width of a Vette's tire to a Cobra's, that is going to make a difference. It's not all about grabbing asphault either, there is also a lot of wheel hop to deal with.
I was planning on tearing that out, but if it can hook just as good as a solid 9", I'll just keep the IRS.
If you're going to drag race that car and you use the independent rear suspension, you'll have to worry about breaking half-shafts. Especially if you use slicks. I don't think using IRS would hook as good either, there are Vipers out there that keep the suspension, use slicks, and still spin too much.

Actually a guy at LS1.com by the name of FadisZ (Or is it Fadiz Z) runs a 12.1 sec. 1/4 mile w/ a 2001 Z06 (385 hp). He only has 353 rwhp too. Z06's are light. In fact they are lighter then a NSX.

I love the AMG's, very sweet cars. I haven't seen a CL65 at work yet, but I have driven the 2003 CL600 and the S600, both with the twin turbo V12. Both incredibly fast, and what a sick engine note. Also driven a 2003 S55, just as nice (and fast) as the others. I haven't even seen the new E55, but after driving an older E55, I can't wait..... Even the ML55 is quick, quickest SUV I've driven (till I come across a Cayenne Turbo).
Almost makes me want to send Mercedes a nice thank-you card for making such killer cars.

Ford put the IRS in the Cobra's for better handling. So keep the IRS if you plan on hitting up the twisties, but put in the solid 9 if you are more concerned about hooking up and not breaking the rear end so much.

Skyline man if your planning on making 1/4 mile monster like I think you are your so much better off with a solid axle. It plants better no matter what the chassis design and is much stronger. IRS half-shafts can only yake so much torque before you will pust them.
Second I will agree Ford is kinda new to the whole IRS rear-end game(the vette is better) and it's a learn as you go process. Look at the improvement of the 99 Cobra to the 03... If you need that 03 or 99 Cobra to hook call Paul's High Performance they know more about it than I could ever wish to learn. They can cheaply start fixing traction problems I bow down to tthem... they are the masters!

Actually, with your comments about wheel hop and tire width you expanded on the point I was trying to make. Maybe doing a better job of it. The fact that the Vette hooks better due to more rubber on the road and less wheel hop (The 03 Cobra is much better than earlier versions) is exactly what I was trying to get at.
IRS in and of itself is not the 03 Cobra's problem. It is the way the Cobra's IRS is designed. Hence my comment about "If IRS sucks so bad why does the Vette hook". It's cause IRS in general doesn't have to suck at launch if you do it right. It will never be a live axle, but it can surely do better than the 03 Cobra.
As for the Skyline race car.....no doubt solid axles do work better for drag racing. And, half shafts are endless probelms for IRS cars with a lot of power on slicks. (Ask people who have put slick on old 427 Cobra's and nailed it)
All I was trying to do was point out that all of the people who act like the Cobra doesn't launch as good as it should because of IRS ignore the fac that many cars that launch better than the Cobra have IRS. Yes live axles do plant better, but from a Ford fan the Cobra's IRS could still use some improvement.

Mercs are not thought of like in years past of their reliability.

Yeah I've never really heard of Vette owners complaining about wheel hop, that might have to do with whole design of the car. It also has like 4 or 5 different modes you can set the Vette to for traction, cornering and what not. I don't know what they all do but one of those settings maybe whats helping to prevent wheel hop as well.
