CV joint/axle shaft confusion

hi everybody......

I have a mechanic here in ecuador who is telling me i need a cv joint (44310-sk7-j12) EVEN if he orders a pass. side axle (44010-sv4-010)....


It is my understanding that the CV joint comes WITH the axle...
am i wrong?!?!?!?!?!?

this is a 900 dollar question here!!?!!?!!!!!!!! :banghead:

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think he is right about the axle being seperate. However, I do not think you should pay more than 100 bucks per cv joint and maybe 50 bucks installation per side. I am not sure of the price of the axle but if I were you, I would call around. Here in Jacksonville, Fla, we have a place called the CV specialist and they did both cv joints on my Integra for like 235 bucks parts and labor. I didn't need my axle replaced. If you are mechanically inclined at all, you can easily change the CV joints yourself. When you remove the tire, you just have to unbolt one side of the hub and it should slide off the end of the CV joint. Then you can slide the CV joint out of the axle but be careful not to force the new one to bend a certain way or let all of its weight hang on the boot. If it doesn't slide right out, you may just have to get right under he axle and kindof lightly pry it out with a screwdriver. It is actually very simple and doesnt take a lot of work.

I really doubt the axle itself is bad. What did this guy tell you was wrong and why it needed replacing?

The deal is im in Ecuador South America.... stuff is EXPENSIVE here, the axle costs 500.00.... the cv joint is 275... plus taxes and installation, it comes out to be like 875.00 bucks!!!!!!! ouch!!!!

well the deal is, when the cv joint broke, (had the grease leaking out) I was stranded in a national park, and had to drive out, like 4 miles on the broken CV joint... so i saw the axle myself, and it was stripped pretty bad....

so thats the deal, i am gonna ship the parts here from the US, and I really NEED to get the right part the first time! hahah :iceslolan

What car and year do you need axles from? I have some laying around and would cut you a really good deal.. Let me know what you need and give me a day or so and I will get you an answer. And as far as installaion just like 20HondaAccord02 said, it is easy, so easy that you will wonder why people charge so much for that. hell you will find that if you start doing it for other people and only charging half of that, you will make some pretty damn good money, hell their making a killing...

Well what happened is they installed the axle and the cv joint, and wanted to charge me 900. I told them hell no, take everything out of the car and i'm going somewhere else.

So i get there on friday to pick it up, and to make a long story short they left the CV joint in there, said they couldn't take that back, etc etc...... raised hell but to no avail. :banghead:


So, now i gotta see if its ok, i mean it runs fine, but the axle was pretty stripped by the broken cv joint, so i gotta get it checked out at another mechanic!

Man, I wish I could have caught you sooner as they just got you man. It is against the law for them to do any work on your car without giving you a quote first. And in the event that they quote you for this and that, and you agree, if they should find something else wrong they replace it on their own, they can only charge you 10% above the original quated price.

Bottom line, any shop in NC cannot just do the work without you agreeing to pay the $900 prior to the work. And once said work is complete they can't charge you more than $990 dollars for the work they did, unless you agreed to a higher amount prior to the work being done.

If you want to continue to pursue this, I can dig up the law on it, as it was just days ago that it was in my hand.

Shit if you in Raliegh, your right around the corner man, I'm in Fayetteville, I would have helped you out for next to nothing. We could have done the axles ourselves, and the CV joint we couldhave taken to my partners shop, as he would have only charged a few bucks to pack it and seal it.

That law applies in North Carolina, and I know it applies in other states but I'm not sure which ones, I will look aroound and see what ones it applies too, and I will post them.
