Red Foot Warning Light

After starting my 2001 Volkswagon Jetta, it's very hard to get out of gear unless I step down real hard on the brake pedal. I get a red foot warning light that comes on, any ideas on what is the cause of this problem? Could it be the transmission or something other like the gear selector, I'm confused. Help!!!!!!!!
