Tranny fluid capacity?

I'm going to change the tranny filter in my '98 Grand Cherokee (4.0L), but I'm unable to find out how much fluid I'll need to put back in. Thanks for your help.

Check your owner's manual. My 1997 manual has the dry capacity listed at something like 21 pints with the 4-speed automatic.

I read that, too, but I thought that just changing the filter would require less fluid than the dry capacity. Or am I looking at it wrong? I guess it wouldn't be the first time.

On mine, changing the filter requires removal of the fluid pan. I'm not exactly sure on this either (I'm doing mine this weekend), but it seems logical to me that removing the pan would drain most of the fluid. On a contradictory note, the Haynes manual I have never mentions 21 pints--I think it mentions something like 2 quarts.

For my situation, I have a parts store close by. If you don't have that luxury, perhaps buy 10 quarts, and take back whatever you don't need?

dropping the pan only drains a bit more than half the fluid. i asked the same question in a later post. I know its between 4-6 quarts though(97 grand cherokee 4.0 liter) I dont think my dispstick is very accurate
