Door Lock Upgrade

From what I was told, GM upgraded the door lock on the sliding door of the Astro & Safari in 1997. During 1997, vehicles were produced with both door locks, some with the old door lock & some with the upgraded lock. Can I replace the old door lock on a 1996 sliding door with the upgraded lock that came out in 1997?
