Hey all........Going down 495 at 95 mph and then out of nowhere my tach and speedo drop to zero and the ignition marker (key symbol on instrument panel) starts flashing and the ignition cuts. This is the second time this has happened since i changed my timing belt/water pump and put in new cam gears. I don't know if my alarm has anything to do with this or did i just miss doing something after putting the t-belt/water pump/cam gear job back together. Oh yeah, it's a '97 Prelude with i/h/e. Recently changed the plugs and wires w/ OEM parts. After i let it sit for a few minutes in the breakdown lane it started back up no problem and ran fine the rest of the day. Any suggestions on what is wrong? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey man I didn't come in here to be berated for the type of car I drive, I just simply wanted some advice from anyone who could help me with my problem. Man, some people have way too much time on their hands to come in to here and be a dick. But for anyone who is at this forum for a legitimate purpose, i'd like to hear what you think about my problem. Thanks.

Don't want to sound real dumb but you sure you are not hitting the speed limiter??? Isn't it around 95-100???

No, this has nothing to do with governed speed. I have a feeling it has something to do with my igniton or maybe some sort of electrical short occuring in the engine bay but i have no idea where it would be or if this is the case at all.

hondata...im sensing sarcasm from this guy...and you are right he doesnt belong in this forum. i dont know why he picked you to dog on, but he probably knows nothing about cars in general. in fact he probably drives some domestic crap that will be outlasted in years, apperance, miles and integrity by your finely crafted honda prelude. im sorry that i dont have any suggestions for your problem, but i wish you luck in fixing it. try posting this same thread in the technical forum, and you might get more hits. good luck keep tuning!!

Should I leave my job then??? I work for Honda :iceslolan I just like to hear what some of you punk ricers have to say.
Well, then I guess it could be a faulty crank sensor. Sometimes if those start going bad, they do not like higher RPM for extended periods of time. Also, did you do any upgrades with the ignition like add a MSD ignition? Those will go bad if you connect and disconnect the battery the wrong way.

punk ricers huh... you think because we make hondas fast that we are ricers? we dont use exhaust "tips", HUGE aluminum wings, and put "type R" stickers all over our cars. you need to go to the civic section for that. get a life. :loser:

ha ha, you punk ricers, who listen to your crazy rock and roll and smoke drugs...listen, im gonna go out on a limb and call your bluff: you dont work for honda because anyone who knows honda, knows that honda has not and never will speed govern a car at 100. at the top of the prelude forum, theres a top speed thread...check it. and if you really worked for honda then you would realize the quality of the cars they make and not get on here and belittle us for our hobbies...after all youre just making honda look bad when you do this. :disappoin :disappoin
as for your comment about punk ricers: very few of us on here are "ricers," we care about our cars and are in a constant pursuit of going fast and looking good. ricers are guys youll find at walmart buying seat belt pads that say honda or something.
there is no need for people like you on a/f. obviously no one cares if you "want to hear what us punk ricers have to say." but we do care when you chime in with remarks like you have.

To all those who contributed useful insight, I thank. I'll check on the fuel pump relay as well as the fuel pump itself. As for poncho...I appreciate your input as well whether or not you work on Honda's (honestly i don't care if you do or not). But for your previous comments, i think they are in bad taste. But so be it. Thanks again I'll check back later.

Whats Up man,
I own a 97 Prelude too and i had the exact same problem but mine happen to me a good bit because i did alot of highway driving. only when i got on the highway and hit about 80 or 90. I had no idea what it was and was tempted to just take it to my local dealer but about four week after the problem started I recived a letter from honda stating they had a recall on some sort of starter swithch that would heat up too much when driving at highway speeds and separate causing all your power to cut out. I took it to the honda dealership and they replaced it for free and it hasnt cut out on me again.
Im 99.9% shure this is the problem check out the honda sights and see if you cant find this recall or drop it by your dealer and they should have that on record.
p.s.
97-00 arnt governed I can get my lude upto 150+ with a lil more tach left
Hope that helps -- QwIk97LuDe
