'91 b16 CRX or '92 Celica ST with 3SGTE?

Which would you rather have? I love the b16, but the 3SGTE is a pretty robust engine...

I am not a toyota guru, what is the 3SGTE? Is that the motor that came in the all-trac turbo celica's? Or is that the newer celica motor? That might help some people make up their minds...

It's the motor from the MR2 turbo and one of the celica's. I'm not sure which. It makes 200 bhp, however, and can be tuned much higher than that. I'm still trying to find a price on it, however.

Any Toyota seems to cost an arm and a leg and three fingers to even fix, let alone, do any mods to.

Really? I've never heard that before. I think I need to do a little more research. Unfortunately, people in the Toyota forums aren't very talkative especially Celica owners.

if its turbo then i think its the all trac and that would be great to have. if its not an all trac i say skip it.the old all trac was hot car did well in WRC too.

What was the last year that the all-trac turbo was made?

from what i understand, they made the all trac in america on 2 consecutive generations of the celica. The last one to have the turbo motor was the last style to have flip-up headlights.

The all trac is a pretty rare car to begin with, and i assume sourcing any kind of parts is going to be tough. I've also heard that the all-trac motor isnt a very easy motor to tune....

Based on availability of parts, and just general ease of tuning, the honda is by far the better choice...the b16 probably has the widest market of any japanese motor. So I'd say the rex.

Thanks for the info. The last year for the flip-up headlights was '93, and that's too old for me anyway. With the CRX, I can swap in the JDM b16a Sir II from the '99-00 Si and have a much newer engine that revs higher anyway. Not as much torque, but what do you expect; it's a Honda.

well, in my openion the big question you have to ask is if you perfer fwd or rwd, least that was the question i had when i debated to make plans for an ef8 or ae86 which were compeditors of each other for a short time.

The Celica isn't RWD, is it?

Get the celica, you will be a happy camper!

Do you have one?

fredthedragon
11-04-2003, 08:33 PM
depends on what year celica you get. if your going front wheel drive i reccomend the honda, honda has been doing it for a lot longer, and has more experience w/ the suped up fwd the only reason i would ever go toyota is if i were getting an older rwd toyota. toyota enthusisists perfer rwd. honda has only recently created rwd and it kick ass.

if you go toyota go mr2 or rwd celica. but that's just my openion. feel free to wait for more.

just to be a little more politically correct i will correct myself "toyota enthusisists that i know perfer rwd" plus honda has vtec, toyota has..... well not vtec.

Thanks for the help. I like Honda a lot better anyway, but 225 bhp and 225 lbs of torque is hard to resist. The engine is pretty old ('91-'93), but it's only $1799 for a complete swap from jspecauto.com (is that site reputable)? More than likely, however, I'll stick with Honda. A CRX is a classic, and with a B16, it's even better

Forget the Celica idea. I just checked the specs on edmunds.com, and the AWD version weighs almost 3300 pounds. Before, I was looking at the ST version which is FWD, and it's only 2600. Like some of you said, if I were to get the Celica, I would get the AWD, but there's no way I'm driving something that heavy around. Even with the extra hp from the 3sgte over a b16, the power-to-weight ratio with the CRX is hard to beat. Thanks for the help, everyone.

:bigthumb: i'de have a rex but w/ my driving record my insurance would be almost $400 a month. for liability.

Haha, I have plenty of friends with the same problem. Fortunately, I've never had any kind of speeding ticket. Just one wreck when I first got my license, but somehow my insurance didn't go up.

the ammount of increase depends on the amoune of damage the insurance company has to cover. and mine had to shell out around 4k dollars to pay for all the damage i caused in one year of me owning my first honda.

totaled out a 93 sentra, repairs for damage from truck backing into me, + new door on a 94 geo prism from car stalling out at a light.
and i fixed all that damage on my car for $1k

Hey i don't post on here much but i saw this and couldn't help myself

My buddy had a celica round a 89 and the 22r (Carb) or 22re (EFI) engine has some serious potential. A good site to get stuff thing from is www.lcengineering.com. They are getting 200+ hp out of those n/a engines. Just thought i'd give u anohter option. Also these engines are all over junkyard so if u need parts u got them. I know they came in Celica's and 4runners and probly other things

Peace!

Thanks for the site. I have no doubt that those engines can be very powerful, but the Celica itself is just too heavy (plus, those engines were a little pricey). Thanks again, though.

When I had my wreck, a woman in a new CRV smashed the back of my '89 Jeep Cherokee. There was only a dent in her hood, but my entire back bumper was ripped off and the entire rear quarter panel was smashed in. I had to pay $2000 in damages for her little dent; I got all of the damage to my car fixed for $1100. Talk about a rip-off!

How is it your fault if she hit you in the ass end?

the Celica engine has way more out put than a b16. A 2nd gen 3s-gte motor come with an impressive 200 stock hp and a 3rd will give a 254hp so the engine stock would blow the b16 out of the water. Now the car it self is heaver so it just all depends.

I had just gotten my license a few days ago, and I was sitting a stoplight waiting to turn left into a parking light. When the light turned green (without an arrow), I started to turn left, convieniently forgetting the fact that the cars coming straight from the opposite direction had the right-of-way. Anyways, I never made it into the parking lot. A CRV coming from the opposite direction nailed my back end. She was speeding, but she still had the right-of-way. Oh well. At least no one was hurt.
And Armyhonda, stock for stock, yes the 3SGTE is much more powerful than a b16, but you have to figure in the hp-to-weight ratio. A 1900-lb car with 170 hp would be much faster than a 3300-lb car with 225 hp. Weight is definitely the enemy.
