Motor swap choices ??

Hi I have a 87 s10 blazer 4x4 with a very tired 2.8L. So I'm looking to do engine upgrade, the rest of the truck is great and the wife is happy with it. Would like more hp but not v8 because the wife will be driving and I'm not sure a v8 would be wise. What can i do ? 4.3 L but what trans will it fit or maybe a new 2.8L with some preformance parts bolted on, air filter, exhaust, ignition
