Series 1 tacky chrome wheels

I find the chrome wheels on the revell 1:25 shelby series 1 kit extremely tacky :disappoin and overly-played out. I mean, what model kit DOESN'T come with chrome wheels? Not that I have a problem with chrome on muscle cars, draggers, imports, its just that on this model they are horrid in my opinion.
I found aluminum to be a fairly decent color to paint my wheels, but am considering the following:
-Steel(slightly diff hue than aluminum, very attractive!)
-Gunmetal
-Silver
-Gold or even flat black(yes i kno gold is "wrx-exclusive", and flat black to be rice-rockety, but hey, lets giv it a try!) :lol2:

Post your suggestions and what you think. Please, do not suggest colors like chrome blue or chrome purple or anything chrome pleas!

I agree totally, almost every revell kit, well not almost, EVERY revell kit, has wheels that are chrome, and i thought i was the only one that was sick of it, but yea i found that aluminum and gunmetal make nice looking rims, even some grey.

if a wheel comes chrome painted, and i want to spraypaint it gunmetal, must i strip the chrome, prime and then paint the wheel? or can i spray primer directly onto the chrome plated wheel, and paint it?

If you want it aluminum? Spray right over the chrome, that's what I do and it works just fine.

If you want to paint the rims you actually should remove the chrome if you want it to be durable at all. Also, I've found that flat colors stick better to chrome than do glosses, so maybe if you prime it that would be ok. I've also sprayed Testors Dullcote on many a chrome part with good success, it kills the shine and looks like magnesium. What really gets me is when they chrome all sorts of parts, like engine or body parts, that shouldn't be shiny and chrome. That's a pain and a half.

If I were you guys, honestly I wouldn't be complaining. When the chrome plating is not there, you can't do crap unless you can ship them out to get chromed, or use some Alcad. Just throw your wheels into some CSC and work from there.

I've recieved a 1969 Baldwin-Motion Camaro with very uneven chroming and all the parts on the tree. Now that sucks, cause you can't even use the chrome if you wanted too.

If you guys don't like the chrome, just stick them in bleach for about a min. then paint them the color that you want them.

Its just bleach. The stuff you use to get stains out of clothes. I didn't think that it could harm you. I just touch the stuff. Pour a little in a container, then stick the wheels in there for about a min, then pull them out, and rinse with water and all of it comes right off. Never melted any parts with it yet, so I think its safe.

:screwy: you skin is like a sponge. You can absorb any poison through it. I would not just reach into the bleech without any gloves on. Think about it? Would you drink bleech??? When you use it to get stains out, it's usually mixed with a pretty good amount of water. Pure bleech can also damage a lot of fabrics and deteriorate them. Is it wise to stick your hands into it?? I don't think so.

Anyway, the Revell Lightning doesn't come with chrome wheels either, but then the kit is a PITA anyway. If I don't like the chrome wheels, I just change'em. That's the nice thing about this hobby.

Edit: and Chlorine Bleech is a main ingredient (sp?) in the deck cleaner I used a couple days ago, the drain cleaner that's under our kitchen sink. It's not a safe chemical. Maybe not as dangerous as acid, but it's still bad enough to break down organic material, and if you think about it...we are organic material.

Honestly, if I buy a kit, and it's like a tuner or muscle car, I leave everything chrome, on stuff like vette's and such (new skool) I paint what's supposed to be that color.

The way I see it is, It's easier to remove chrome plating off kit parts than it is to add it. Just my :2cents: .

Since there seems to be some discrepencies here I will set things straight:

Actual chlorine bleach is incredibly dangerous. The stuff we have in our houses is very, very dilute, and that's why it doesn't melt your hand off if you touch it. However, you really shouldn't be touching the stuff regardless. Bleach is a base, not an acid, and it's very strong. The problem with bases is that they don't readily wash off your skin, and worse, the base starts attaching to the lipids and such that make up cell walls, and it will start destroying your flesh. A chemical burn from a base is a lot more destructive than a burn from an acid of comparable srangth would be. If you read the label on the bottle it says not to touch it, even, and though you may think it sissy to regard those labels, they're there for a reason. If you are going to use chemicals like bleach, CSC, oven cleaner, or whatever, you should really go get a little container of latex gloves. I got a bunch of them for about $2 at Wal-Mart. There are only 20 in there, but I only use one at a time so it will last me a while. And what's better, the skin on my fingers will last me a while too.

Remember, use common sense. Don't ignore warnings and the like. It may just be paint (or glue or bleach), but it's pretty toxic.

I better start being smarter about stickin my hand in a container of bleach. Thanks for the heads up guys.

WOW! thanks a whole lot for posting these pictures! i'll try to make my rims as real as possible, but instead of using aluminum i might use gunmetal. But thanx alot anyways.
