okay help

So my mom was trying to explain to me where to find my Spark plugs in my 95 Taurus GL, 3.8L. She was on the phone so she was doing her best I've never had to change my own Spark Plugs so I don't really know what I'm looking for. I know what a spark plug looks like but I don't know what a distributor cap is HELP!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe someone can explain it better and maybe I'll listen better because you're not my mother...

The spark plugs themselves are located on both sides of the engine (three on each side). Since this is a transverse mounted engine, three of the plugs will be facing the front of the car, and the other three will be facing the rear. Look around the headers (the exhaust pipes that connect to the engine block). There will be thick (6mm+) spark plug wires connecting to each one. The other end of the spark plug wires is connected to the distributor cap. The front spark plugs are easy to replace. However, because of the tight space, the ones facing the rear are a bit more challenging. Also, do not use a regular socket to replace the spark plugs. If you don't already have one, pick up a spark plug socket at your local auto parts store that will fit the spark plugs on your vehicle (5/8" I think).

If you don't have experience changing sparkplugs don't go touching the engine...you'll just get yourself into a very expensive mess. :sly:

I was seeking some help with our '93 Taurus station wagon when I came across your forums in a search. My husband has always done his own repairs and maintenance, however, he could NOT get the rear spark plugs out in this car. Is there some kind of trick to it?

I know on my 97 (it's got the Duratech motor), the plenum has to come off. :banghead: Thanx Motomaster engineering :loser: I beleive my mechanic said it was a two hour job just to replace the plugs. Not backyard mechanic friendly.

The discussion on whether or not the plenum has to come off or not has been gone over a million times over at www.taurusclub.com

Several people including me have performed plug changes n the Duratec without taking the plenum off. It is a "by feel" job meaning you can't see what you are doing but it can be done in less time than doing it by taking the plenum off. By not taking the plenum or Upper intake manifold off you do not expose yourself to
1. vacuum leaks
2 debris getting in you engine
3. stripped bolts by overtorquing the bolts back into aluminum.
