While paint is drying on the Eclipse I went ahead and began the Nizmo skyline with the help of Tamiya R33 and SAS R400 trans kit (and due my mistakes lots of putty... :(
Some will remmember I had a thread on putting the kit together and showed this model in primer, but after putty, sanding, scribing, repeat repeat repeat and eventualy I had something that was semi-presentable.
So enough with my peti problems... Mica Red, some Gloss coats, no rubbing, no waxing or cutting yet.

Dude! That is one nice paintjob! So nice in fact, I'm gonna use mica red for my soarer. Is it the tamiya colour or another brand?

Tamyia Mica Red! (Its a very nice color, goes on easy, the more layers you add the deeper and glossier the paint becomes! Easy to sand down too!)

Wow, looks awesome. Never really seen an R33 model in red before, so it really makes me excited for this completion.

Looks hot! Question, this is an R33 right, did you cut out the bonnet for CF decal or motor trans-plant?
slk320
11-01-2003, 10:46 PM
Yes. the bonnet is cut open for two reasons... first off its a resin piece from SAS so I had to open the stock hood anyway to replace, but I am going to need the wheels from the HKS Kansai R32, so while I am pirating the kits wheels, might was well pirate the engine and do a little transplant ;). And yes, the bonnet will include the carbon fiber treatment on both sides and hood release latches/hardware...
Here is the bonnet and the primered model:

Great, first R33 I see with an engine. Can't wait for more progress, btw is it gonna be TT, or T?
slk320

Not sure about TT or BIG T.. I think I am leaning more towards TT because the basic lay out is going to be structured around the R32 engine....from Kansai service.

I don't know about him, but I use chrome-silver or aluminum for a base coat for mica and metal flake colors.

I used gloss white. I like the translucent effect of the candy colors on white. You could use silver or gold for different effects.
The paint came out nice, because the can was preheated and flowed very nicely. Also I am using new laquer gloss from Testors military colors collection.. seems to work very good with the Tamiya paints.. I had some doubts about mixing them, but I never had GREAT results from Tamiya clear, so I decided to try swomething new.

for paint I use 1 ocat of light primer, wait till dry, send for imperfections, another coat of fine white primer, send with fine grit, wait till dry. One fine mist coat of base color, ait 15 minutes and pray wet coat of base color. Than after several days of drying time I go with the main color and pray 6-7 coats (2 cans worth) every 15-20 minutes. after that 5-6 coats of clear gloss and dry it in the dust free box for about a week.
Than polish using a detail master polishing cloths going progressively down from 3200 grit all the way to 12000 grit. Than wax (I use turtle automotive wax)
As far as the wheels go, I will use the Nismo 400R wheels that are found (or at least very close to) Kansai service HKS R32 kit from Aoshima. They are the closest thing to the "correct" Nismo 400R wheels that I was able to find.
I am looking for good refference photos though.. does anyone know of any for the engine, chasis, etc???
