im thinking about getting a 00 celica gt, stock. I want to get rid of that embarrising 180 stock hp, so what can i do? I have about 2500 to spend on parts, i was thinking about AEM underdrive pulleys and the ultra s street crank pulley and trd headers and hks hiper exhaust and BLitz sus air cleaner intake system and AEM cold air intake. I can get all that for about 2350. After buying all that about how much total hp should i expect instead of the crappy origional 180, and i know its an all too common question but after doing that to the car what should my 1/4 time be?

The GT only has 140 hp stock, the GTS has 180 hp.
and I wouldnt call it embarrasing or pathetic
look at the other cars it competes with, civic SI, SVT focus, cooper S,
and others, all of which have less power.
of course 180 hp isnt alot compared to the likes of Supras and Skylines, but its all relative.
the GTS is somewhat hard to get big hp and tq levels out of because of extremely high compression ratio, so not many companies make a turbo kit for it. I believe turbonetics makes a nice one that gives it around 280 hp, but it costs $5000.
I would simply go with a nice exhaust (TRD) and headers. and then go to the underdrive pulleys and maybe an SAFC if you want to mess with the fuel system, which can be quite a headache.
I would check out celica.net and newcelica.org for better resources though.

First off lets get one thing straight. 180 STOCK horsepower from a four cylinder engine that ISNT super or turbocharged is NOT EMBARASSING!! That and your car doesnt even have 180...it has 140...and that too is NOT embarassing...sheesh...whats the world comming to?
Now that my rant is out of the way. When I look at your list all I see is OVERPRICED brand names.
Heres how I would mod it:
1.) Make your own intake...it not that bloody hard. savings=close to $150
2.) Yes redo the exhaust system. I myself would go with either a MagnaFlow or a Flowmaster exhaust system. The good news is that if you cant install this yourself...then your local Big Al's Mufflers (if they have them where you are) will do the swap for a little less than $200 I believe.
3.) Exhaust headers, yes you need them to free up the exhaust leaving your engine. Dont go fancy chrome unless you really plan on showing the car. Even then, you can just buy the normal black stainless steel ones prime and paint them with engine paint (they sell it at AutoZone...$4.00 a can...grab some)
4.) Dont mess with your engines internals. Lets face it. None of us here know as much about the 2zzge as the tech heads at Toyota did when they pulled that 180HP out of their butts.
5.) Pulleys...sure...if you want. Just as long as they are lighter than the stock ones you may be a ble to boost your HP a little.
6.) Id go with a lighter flywheel. This way you will get alot more of that nice horsepower comming off at the lower speeds.
Thats just what I would do.

I can understand people thinking it embarassing when they compare their 140 stock hp to the mkIII supra with a stock NA hp of 200, but people forget to take a lot of other stuff into account. Most notably, the celica weighs 2500lbs! 17.1 lbs/horse Supra is 3500, 17.5 lbs/hp.
(Again, turbo celica v. supra, 13.8 lbs/horse vs. 15.0 lbs/horse)
I must say if there's a $5000 turbo kit that doubles the horsepower of the engine, buy it! But I doubt it has that big of an effect without numerous other mods.
Overall the difference you'll see is later on, when you find out that the supra's engine is just a platform capable of handling so much more, even proportionally speaking, than the celica (Reliably, at any rate). Unless you're looking to sink another 10+k into the engine you aren't worried about that.
Anyhow, just my 2 cents. If I said anything inaccurate feel free to flame, heh.

sounds like we got a supra fan onboard.
the turbo kit I mentioned before comes with a plethora of goodies for the engine, (hence the $5k) and the hp is to the fly wheel, (the kit is not from turbonetics either)
The supra is a whole nother ball game, and we should not be comparing it to the celica, of course the 7M and the 2JZ can handle butt loads more power, their bigger engines and were built to be powerhouses. you cant compare apples to watermelons.
I think 180 hp for a 1.8 litre engine is pretty damn impressive, look at the new Tiburon with the V6, it only has 181 (i think) hp and thats out of a V6!, and look at the new Mazdaspeed Protege, the turbo charged 4banger, it only puts out 170hp!
so the point is, the celica is pretty damn impressive compared to the rest of the cars in its field, but pretty mediocre compared to the supra, which would explain the $15,000 in price dfference (MSRP)

If you'll read a bit more carefully I was explaining how the power to weight ratio initially favors the celica. But yes, I'm a supra fan. I also happen to be a celica fan.
To rephrase, whining about 140(180)hp stock from a car that weighs 1.25 tons can be equated to saying that the NA(turbo) supra is sluggish.
And I thanks for clarifying what came with the kit, I'm gonna have to look in to that.

by "NA(turbo)" I assume you mean NA(non turbo) or Normally Asperated?
And I agree with you, whining about a 2500 lb car with 180 hp doesnt make any sense.
and about the turbo kit, I saw it in what I believe was Sport Compact Car, the guys GTS was sponsored by this company and the car was incredible. they have a website but I cant for the life of me remember what it was. It put out like 230 or 240 hp to the wheels, and comes with the works, i will look for it on the SCC website.

Heh, nope, by NA(turbo) I meant NA(turbo), I was trying to say two things at once, see 140(180) horsepower. Sorry about the confusion.

I'm impressed that they put out a whole kit so quickly to do so much for the 2000 model. If only they did that for the 91! I'll have to resort to putting things together out of spare parts again. Ah well, I enjoy that more than I like to admit anyway :)
