Reverse Glow Gauges

I recently installed glow gauges on my 97 spyder gs. It came with the four gauges, a dimmer switch and a black box wired to the dimmer switch which i assume overides the factory dimmer. The gauges have plugin sockets to plug in to the dimmer. The only thing i had to wire was the one ground and one power wire. I grounded the ground in the dash board on the ground in the dash right next to the steering. Now heres the problem, i wired the power to the combination switch for the headlights, turnsignal, highbeam etc.. When i did that, and put the battery cable back on, my gauges didn't light up, but my headlights wouldn't shut off unless you flip the switch on the dimmer on the gauges. I then moved the power wire to another wire in the combination switch, and that time, my interior lights wouldn't shut off unless i pressed the dimmer switch, and even then, my gauges wouldn't light up. My third time, i wired to a power switch and powered through the radio wire, and it just didn't work at all. Can someone tell me what i'm doing wrong? If you need anymore info, let me know.

what i did was run a power line right of the battiery and put a cool looking switch and that work for me.

I hooked up my power to the parking lights under the dash ( not where the switch is), the one that is close to the fuse box. I just tapped into that and it turns on whenever i turn the headlights on.
