Wheel sizes...

I never really thought about this until today, but...
Why is it that everywhere outside the US also refers to wheel sizes in inches? Everything else to them is metric, yet they're wheel sizes are always referred to in inches... 17", 18", etc...
Thats pretty wierd. I mean everything is metric, and then when it comes to wheels they use the American SAE, and start talking inches..
Just wondering if all the Non-US people find that wierd?
I mean, it'd bug me out if we used all SAE sizes here, and then when it came to wheels we used metric sizes... lol, 43cm wheels (17") or 45.5cm wheels (18")

My Wheels 43cm, nope, 17 inches sounds bigger.:D :D

Because tires are in inches? :p
There have been some metric diameter wheels and tires, but they have never caught on. In order to have metric sized wheels, you would have to convince a tire (or tyre) manufacturer to produce metric sized tires. The best know are the Michelin TRX tires that debuted in The States on the 79 Mustspank. They lasted a while and you can still get TRX tires. Saab (I believe) also used TRX tires.

I'm from sweden and we use the metric system. But as you said as for wheels and tires, inches are used. Also: all speakers are messured in inches. (one exception - pioneer and their stupid catalogs)
I guess it has always been that way and there isn't a demand for changing what we always have used...
(altough we didn't change to LHD cars until back in '67)
