Woman question here.

Can a transmition that won't shift into 2nd unless I take my foot off the gas and let it shift. Anyway, can that make a car overheat? Also, my truck is using up alot of trans. fluid. It is a 1994 with only 126,000 miles on it. Do you think I need a new transmission? Forgive me but I am a female and I don't want to get taken at some trans. shop. Thanks for your help. :p

We had a 93 with around 89,000 miles that shifted like that. Are you leaking fluid or is it disappearing ? I'm not sure if your trans has a modulator valve (they might have gone electronic that year). If it does it might be leaking internally and cause shift problem.The engine would suck up this fluid and burn it. But anyway I changed mine that didn't work. Dropped the transfer case, cleaned the governer, that didn't work and wound up getting it rebuilt. As long as you can get it to upshift I don't think it will overheat. But I think it's time to have it looked at.

The 90's Explorers have poorly designed transmissions. Mine failed at 50k, had it rebuilt. Now has failed at 113k. I bought a replacement from Ford for 1,300$ plus tax and core. They give a 3yr / 36k warranty, which is better than any repair shop. Hope to have it in by next week. A rebuild/install will run from about $1,600 to $2,400.

you can find a place to do it for 800 dollars. my transmission just started to do that. to mechanics say i will need a new one soon. how long have you been driving it like that?

it wont overheat but the temperature will rise if you let the rpm's stay high.

Have the modulator checked. Went in mine at about 100k. Was burning tranmission fluid like crazy. Its been fine now for 25k and was around a 100 bucks to fix.

Back to transmissions. Your transmission is not likely to cause your engine to run hot - unless it's got major problems - but rather the engine over heating will damage an automatic transmission in short order! The transmission fluid is cooled by lines that run through the radiator thus an overheated engine will overheat the trans. Sounds to me you may have two problems!
