Parking tickets are dumb.

Why is it that I can only buy six minutes with 10 cents? What a rip off. The city is a criminal. It's bad enough that I have to pay for parking, and it's worse that I have to pay the same ammount as people who park lincolns, or H2s - when my car occupies far less physical space.
Now for the worst part, in the seven minutes that I was busy checking out books and walking back to my car, the time I had paid for expired, and a meter reader happened to take note of this.
For seven minutes, which could have been paid for with just a faction over 10 cents, I got a ticket for $20. I knew my time had run out, and I was hurrying to get back as soon as possible, I was even thinking about putting a few more cents in to make up for the unpaid time I had spent occupying that little tiny rectangle of street space. But no. When I got back I had a ticket tucked under the wiper blade, and since I'm already complaining about the ticket anyway, I'll add that it was soggy from rain, and that made it even worse. Further, the ticket was very poorly printed, nothing that applied to my violation of parking laws lined up with the standard ticket, it was all printed sloppily, kind of shifted down, and out of alignment.
IF these people are so smart, why can't I just pay the 10.019 cents I really owe them? If I pay $20, I demand to get $20 worth of parking time damn it! They're criminals. At least they don't use the boot, where they literally hold your car hostage for a ransome, those are literal criminals, not even the figurative "robbers" that I've dealt with today. The booters are worse, literal scum, dragging society down.
I'm waiting for the day when people are issued "standing violations" for using sidewalks without paying the tolls.

i agree. that shits crazy!
good thing we got meter faries here. (or watever u call that bastard)
and i think they put in 10 or 20 cents. i wander if they get paid for it? isnt it illegal? thers a few girls wearing some sort of outfit that surely atrackts guys attention, and they call themselves those meter fairies. they walk around and put money in.
oh well 10c=10 minute so i think its enough time.
but i still dont like it. i have to alwyas go back and make sure im up to date with the park and add more money. and i hate it. especially if i have to drive home on my last 50 cents worth of fuel.
im gonna start parking at loading zones now

Regardless of the space your vehicle takes up – I agree that parking tickets are pretty damn stupid. Just another revenue generator for the local cop shop.

Another scam to get money out of your pockets.See how they have a parkie cop hiding and constantly checking the gauges, just crying to write you that ticket.Or better yet, give you the dreadful boot.I watched a show on TLC about these guys, they literally are all over just waiting to give you a ticket. What was funny was that they were gonna boot a guy,so he jumped in the car and tried to take off.Their yelling "Hurry, get that boot on NOW!!!"and he just get's away.I'm serious, the boot is the highlight of the day for them.If you tell them you'll pay, they'll say no.If you say don't put the boot on,same thing. If you try to stop them, you get charged for assaulting a officer,The worst thing about them is that they have just as much rights as an officer, only less than half the authority.

Geez, you really are a bunch of cheapskates!A few lousy cents to ensure that you get a fair chance of parking in town?Sounds good to me.If you can't afford to run a car, don't drive.running home on your last 50 cents of fuel will only end up sucking all the crud from the bottom of the tank into your fuel filter.

As for tickets and clamps.......If you don't want to pay, don't assume that you can getaway with breaching the rules.

You're right Tanaraki, I should just carry a sledge hammer in my car, and when I park I'll beat the figurative shit right out of that stupid device, and if the "parking enforcement officer" asks me what I did, I'll just tell him that it was like that when I got there.

Heres what ya do, Take the ticket. Pay it. Go back to exact same location. without car (no need for another ticket) find metermaid. Get to know him or her. Some how find something incommon and exploit it. Strike up Ramdom conversation.Sympathize For them, applaud them for performing such a grueling job. Buy them a soft drink out of appreciation. Make plans to hang out sometime. As soon as you get into said "METER_NAZI'S" House take something worth The ticket value. It's upto you to continue this relationship or not. Are you so desperate that you need to keep a companion under these pretenses. Whatever you decide will work just fine for you.

don't even complain about parking. Parking at ucla is a quarter for 8 minutes. a quarter...not $.25. You literally have to have a quarter. kind of way too much for a student to pay. and parking is $7 a day. I went to UCSB this weekend and parking was $2 a day. And then i went to cal poly and they have FREE visitor parking. BTW, the ucla parking is enforced 24/7 for the permit spots. The meter are a little better. 7am-9pm all week. :(

I pulled up on a cop writing me a parking ticket once. He was an asshole. Drove up and down the entire street writing people up for stupid shit. Not even a main road. Just some off residential street. It was pathetic. It happened twice.

Maybe I should just do 30 dollars worth of damage to something the city owns.. since I paid for it.

It's just another form of taxation.

Man, you guys need to either move to smaller towns, or move to VEGAS, baby!! All the parking you could want, FREE, all the time!!! It doesn't get any better than that. (Actually, the one place you have to pay to park in Vegas is the courthouse, for getting marriage licenses. It's like $6 an hour or something, but everywhere else is FREE!!!)

Paying for parking is just another way you pay for the higher wages, better entertainment, better shopping, etc. for living in a big city. You don't want the tickets, you gotta let go of the benefits.

I normally live in a town of 36,000.
Right now, I live in a town of 8,000.

Both are fairly small.

But you're in the Seattle area, yes? What's your county population?

I wanted to move there, until I visited and had to pay for parking to go shopping!!! That's nuts!

It was about 1.7 million in 2000. Due to the increased number of people I have noticed moving here, I would say it's close to 2 mil now, if not more. The county is huge though.

The only place you really have to pay for parking is seattle, and that's deep in the city. Maybe bellevue in some places as well. It's not a bad place if you like traffic and rain (i am tired of it). I personally think there are better places to live, but if you want to go join the rat race.. by all means.

Where are you moving from?

Not moving now, we bought a house here. But I'm in St. George, UT, where summer temps top 115º regularly and it rains maybe 7 days a year. Our county pop is 100k, most of that is connected so it's one city as far as I'm concerned.
I visited Seattle a year ago Oct., and loved it. Beautiful area, loved the architecture, loved the art, love the higher wages. But housing is expensive, parking cost money, crime is higher, and I like living within an hour of my family.
I didn't think the traffic was that bad. At least you have more options than just driving, if you're in the city.
Oh and the car theft stats scared me. Readers Digest published a list of the top 10 cities for car theft - 4 of them were in the Seattle area. That's because it's not hooligans-steal-the-car-and-joyride car theft, but take-it-and-ship-it-overseas-in-an-hour car theft.

Indeed.. don't forget the failing job market here. The state taxes the shit out of Boeing and Microsoft. I'm not suprised that Boeing left the state. Microsoft will probably be the next to go.

Probably attributes police giving out more parking tickets here.

I really hate greed.

But as I understand there' s no state income tax, and Oregon (I used to live in OR) has NO sales tax. So make all your money in WA and spend it all in OR.

If you hate the area, why are you still there?

Yes, we have no state income tax, but what good is it, If you can't find a job..?

I am still here because I don't have the means to move. I am attending college on the eastern side of the mountains (central washington university) which isn't so bad. I don't mind the traffic so much, it's just the rain that gets to me. I think I'm more of a desert person.
