Turbo my Maxima?

I really would like to either add a turbocharger to my car or a supercharger to it. But I am still cotemplating on whether I should or not. First, I got my Maxima a month ago, and it has 78k miles on it. I drive around 30-40 miles a day. I saw that superchargers require 92+ octane, and where I live the highest you can find is 91 octane. I want a fast car sometime in college, but I don't know if I should try to make the Maxima fast or if I should get a different car in a couple of years, like a Camaro or something, and make that fast. Luckily I have a friend that knows how to install turbochargers and superchargers, so that is a plus. I know I am rambling on a lot but I really am lost right now. What do you think I should do: 1. Simple mods on the Maxima and save up my money for another car later on, or 2. Go for the turbocharger and make my car fast.

Go to forums.maxima.org there is a forum dedicated to forced induction. All of your questions can be answered there.

be careful! a 400+ hp 4door full of friends after a frat party is a great formula for disaster.

That's the reason I started logging onto forums. I can tell there is no one place to get all your questions answered. Best thing - don't get in a hurry and ask specific questions once you have read up on the basics. There are a number of pro and cons that are not in brochure. For example, Supercharging has lowered gas mileage on some max's as much as 25%, while turbo max's seem to get better mileage. The installations are different and how they pull is also different. You probably won't ever get a clear cut answer to which is better. If you are looking for a simple formula to add a lot of horsepower, there doesn't seem to be one. Major modification usually require 2-3 smaller mods to get the most out of it and keep the engine safe from damage. I found this site in my journeys, it will let you know most of what is possible for a Gen4 max.

hey, they didn't say anything about the sound quality of the Pacesetter Catback. Stuff doesnt rust as easily where I am, so I think i'd be safe there. Does anyone know If it would be obnoxious or cool?

Before you do anything as far as adding boost to your car be sure you go and get a compression test first because with the mileage on your car's engine there is a good chance that you may have some issues.

Yeah, I like this. The performance mods section looks very thorough and up to date. This is a good page if you have an idea what you need already.

Yeah, screw the turbo and supercharger. I am just going to do a couple of performance mods and then I am going to buy a camaro or a trans am in a couple of years when my Maxima is nice and old.

i would spend money on making the maxima fast. it would be a lot cheaper than buying a camaro and modifying that. it also depends on what you like. i would never buy a domestic car, but that's just me. good luck.

got a point about the domestic quality issues.
i wouldn't get your hopes too high about making the maxima go too fast. there's a reason all performance cars are RWD. i would say keep the max nice for rolling, and save for a real performance vehicle

If you're going to wait until your Max wears out, you could be waiting a really long time. You have only 78K miles? You'll double that without a doubt.

Whats up with everyone wanting a Camaro or Firebird...or a Mustang? I'm so sick of seeing them. They are like assholes...everyone has one.
I'd give you more props for making the max fast then I would making an Fbody fast. Originality is very scarse nowadays...

You do make a good point. I like the sleeper look myself. Hmmm, I wonder if there are any other cars out there that might be a better choice to modify though.

Word, when i got my old maxima i said i was gonna wait for the engine to blow then get it rebuilt wth a turbo. that was at 90,000 miles. at 167,000 miles i realized the car would never all out die and just gave up and bought my new car.
