previous gen: D16Y8 (1.6L SOHC VTEC like the EXs)
current generation: (I forget the engine code but, it should have the same engine as the 7G Civic EX... 1.7L SOHC I-VTEC)

Hey do you also know if the interiors of an EL and EX Civic are similar? I've only been in an EL once and since the aftermarket selection for an EL is quite minute I'm wondering if dash kits/guages are interchangable ... For some reason I'm kinda wanting to get an EL ...:p

hey i am not too sure bout that, i live in toronto and i often see ppl with the indigo gauges, i BELEIVE they are compatible with the canadian DX civic 2000 (whatever the year is that looks similiar to the el) sorry i know that was vague, but i am 99% sure they will fit. i've asked a couple shops in toronto and they all say the same thing, yes we carry them but its for a civic but it will work

You're right but, most parts are more easily changeable w/ the EX model Civics. I'm not sure but, the gauges may be similar but the whole dash is totally different... especially the center panel in the prior generation ELs.
