problem on start up 1996 escort encore automatic

Hi, am new here but have this problem when staring my escort encore automatic 1996, it fires up fine but when i put it into drive it cuts out, I have to leave it running for around 5 minutes then it is ok for rest of the day, is driving me nuts and cant work it out... anyone any ideas???
