painting

Hi I am new at this forum and I am wondering if I can paint a car a little bit at a time and leave like a door in primer until everything is in primer? Then complete the job of painting the car. I mostly want to know if it is alright to do that. Do i have to get a certain kind of primer. My boss told me primer is not waterproof. Is there A special waterproof primer? Thanks for the help
