91 Caprice "forgets" keyless entry code

Hi,
my Caprice stopped responding to my keyless remote so I reprogrammed it. After programming, it works fine as long as I keep using it (LOCK then UNLOCK etc.) As soon as I stop for a few seconds it stops responding. The case is the same with both my transmitters which have new batteries. Any ideas what might be happening? Is there a battery inside the keyless entry module that maintains volatile memory?
