Hello there to all from Scotland, I have recently bought an 8v 2.5 944 (Early dash). It is a car I have always wanted since a young lad and have finally managed to get one. It was the best car I have owned and was chuffed to bits,
HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
It has turned into a nightmare.
1. At high speed when accelerating there is some serious vibration from the back end which gets less when sitting at steady throttle or slowing down. Anyone got any ideas?
2. I jacked the car up at the back end to check the wheel bearings after hearing some strange crunching noises from the back end. The bearings were worn so I changed these. After changing them the play up and down disapeared, (As did the noise), however if you hold the wheel top and bottom it rocks from side to side a good bit. This surely is not right is it?
3. I just snapped a Universal joint today, well I haven't stripped it to inspect it yet but thats what it appears to be. Do you think this could be related to the above problems?
4. The engine is burning oil excessivly, around half a litre every 100 miles. It is particularly bad when changing down. I have checked the compression and I am getting over 200psi on each cylinder. However the amount of oil it is burning seems to be too much to be valve seals. Anyone got any ideas?
Any help you guys can give would be much appreciated to prevent me becoming totally disenchanted with it and giving up.

200 psi is excessive compression, there must be a lot of oil passing through the rings...this is weird because the engine is supposed to have low compression when worn, but your engine is so worn out that the compression actually got higher. I'm affraid you are going to have to perform a full rebuild to the engine.
About the rear vibration, check all the suspension bushings and joints, there should not be any play. A worn out driveshaft will cause vibration. Also the tires could be out of balance. Good luck.

For the rear end making noise, check the CV's. It's a common wear item and must be inspected every so often.
For the steering wheel moving back and forth, it could be a couple of things... first I would check the wheel balance. This will cause a lot of vibration at anything over 40mph. Also have the brake disks checked for straightness. If one of these has warped, it will also cause a lot of vibration. If your disks are warped they will cause the steering wheel to move more when breaking, especially from higher speeds.
