I am planning on buying a 4 runner. I dont know what year i should get b/c i really want one from 97-99.
1) What type of gas mileage does it get?
2)What year is the best?
3)What year to avoid?
4)What things do i have to watch out for?
5)Does it have the famous toyota reliability?
6)If it does have problems what are the most common?

The 98 in my opinion is the best. Gas mileage on a 2WD is about 21-25 mpg. no major probs.

a toyota is a toyota, of course its reliable. gas mileage is usually in the low 20s, depending on how heavy your foot is. off course you always wanna check out the engine and exhaust to make sure theres nothing goin on that shouldnt be. i also like to check the hitch receiver to see if it was used. its better if its unused because you dont know what that other guy was pullin around. theres not really any consist problems

I own a 97 with a 150k miles. No major problems in the year I've owned it. Would have to agree with previous poster, 98 best bang for the buck. Only own a 97 cuz I found a good deal. I get about 22mpg freeway, 4wd, 3.4 V6. Hard to go wrong with a Toyota. As with any car, you may want to check Carfax and dealer records before purchasing. Good luck.

There are alot of used ones out there. Look for a creampuff. Don't settle for one with alot of off-road use.
