I was curious as to how to set my cam gear on my car when i install it. I have a 2.3L VTech 5-speed. I wasn't shure whether I should retard it and how far or advance it and how far and which does what. I have experience with working on cars, I am just more experienced with old muscle cars and am learning more about front wheel drive performance. thanks for all the info I can get

Cam gears for SOHC engines are waste, IMO. Cam gears do nothing for ignition timing, they adjust valve timing. Valve timing is a science & more is not better. Advancing increases low-end power - retarding increases high-end(high RPM) power. To adjust it/them properly you would need a dyno.

actually, a SOHC can sometimes (depending on the situation) benefit more than a DOHC. However, for a cam gear to be worth anything, you should have an aftermarket camshaft, and it should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS be tuned at the dyno. Because you need to be able to monitor timing and a/f ratio among other things in a controlled environment. You CAN technically kind of tune it at the track, but that's tooooo estimated for me. Invest time in dyno tuning, else don't get a cam gear.

When does a SOHC benefit more than a DOHC? Only benefit I can think of is, its cheapier for parts(top end)

Thanks for all the info and anymore is welcome... What else other than the typical intake, header and exhaust would you reccomend for bolt on performance?

Hi I'm earth! Have we met?
Your going to have to explain this one to me because I'm not comprehending how an SOHC can benefit is some situations over a DOHC with cam gears.
Peace
